  1. Apologies if this is not in the correct forum, but I'm sure many volunteers help out at the district and unit level...is it an issue if I were to be a leader in a troop in one district, but volunteer at the district level in another district?  Or does it not matter that much and I'm overthinking things?  I'm in the process of attending meetings and getting to know the leaders in a troop, but just starting the application process (their chartered org requires a separate background check for volunteers in addition to the one that would be done by BSA).  How would fees work if I were approved by the troop and then decide to volunteer at the district level?

  2. Thanks again for all the help and information...I've completed all of the paperwork and printed out a copy of my YPT certificate, will take it to my next troop meeting and will also make a few copies just in case.  As I said before I'm looking forward to being apart of my troop and the organization for many years to come and am looking forward to being officially registered so I can start wearing the uniform :)

  3. Thanks for all the input everyone, I'm printing the application and will be handing it in at the next troop meeting...unless it would be better to take it to the council office?  Either way, looking forward to being apart of the organization for many years to come!

Good for you for getting your uniform already! If only I could get all the leaders in my troop to be so committed.  😄

As for getting yourself registered, there can be delays if you let others handle the job of getting it to council. The fastest, surest way to get yourself in the system as fast as possible will be to get the signatures from your unit leaders and then get the application DIRECTLY to our council's registrar, either in-person or scanned and sent in an email. She is incredibly prompt and utterly dependable - if you get it to straight to her, you won't have any problems. I will PM you her information!

Thanks for the information! I found the application form online, I'm assuming it's valid if I printed and filled it out then handed it to the appropriate people?

  5. Thanks for the prompt response to my question.  I intend to be a registered volunteer and am waiting to submit another application (previous one was closed and never apparently looked at by appropriate people).  I have held off on wearing the uniform as I did know that only registered members should wear it

  6. I apologize if this is a silly question, but if I'm volunteering in a local troop and am still new to it.  I'm of the impression the scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, committee members, etc. for sure should have a uniform for sure to identify themselves, but what about volunteers such as myself that are new and don't have any specific position?  I bought a uniform, but I also wanted to make sure I'm on the up and up about any protocols.  Again, apologies if this is a dumb question, but it's been a while since I've been involved with the Scouts.

That's great! I am the same way; no family of my own yet, so I love having a meaningful place where I can volunteer and make a difference in the lives of young people. Another welcome aboard to you my friend!

Thanks again for the warm welcome...the troop I volunteered in had its first in person meeting last night so I was able to meet everyone involved with the troop who were all very welcoming.  I'm looking forward to being more involved going forward and am hoping this current drop in cases continues to go down as more people get vaccinated; I could tell the scouts were excited to be back to in person meetings and I think for kids especially, it's important to have that interaction in person.

Greetings from Mission Viejo, my new and fellow OC Council friend! Thank you for getting involved with Scouting in our community; we definitely need all the volunteers we can get! We are especially lucky to be part of a strong council with good leadership and a excellent community reputation. Do you have kids in the program too, or are you involved purely from the desire to make your community a better place? 😀

Believe me when I say, this forum is one of the best places to go when you have questions or need guidance about ANYTHING related to Scouting. You are almost always going to get a few solid opinions that will help you steer your course and make your program the best it can be, so check on here often and don't be afraid to comment on whatever tickles your fancy. And since you are in my same council, you can count on me to be here with any questions you might have specific to our area, council, programs, leadership, or properties. Glad to have you on board, and be sure to look for me at the next council event once we finally start operating live activities again!

Thank you for the warm welcome...I don't have kids in the program, volunteered in the desire to make my community a better place and give back.  I definitely look forward to when live events and meetings can happen again and in the meantime I'll be pretty active on this forum!

  9. Hi everyone, just joined this forum.  I was involved with Cub Scouts way back in the day and with Boy Scouts as well, haven't been involved since 2000 but recently decided I wanted to get involved again as a volunteer.  I signed up with a local troop in December and am currently waiting for my application to be approved and am looking forward to helping out with said troop and giving back to a program that I had a lot of fun with back in the day.  I realize now is a weird time to sign up what with the pandemic, but I'm looking forward to being active once things clear up and start getting back to normal!
