  1. Alright, folks. I've been gone for a while, but now I'm back. I went to Philmont this summer(awesome experience-I highly reccomend it), and now have a list of ten things that I learned at Philmont. So, without further ado, here it is:

Ten Things I Learned At Philmont

    10. Water is measured not in quarts or liters, but in Nalgenes

    9. Just because the dad's nice doesn't mean the kid is

    8. That Therm-a-Rest is well worth the weight(pun entirely intended)

    7. Any health problems are caused by not drinking enough water. If you twist your ankle, you're not drinking enough water.

    6. If you find a two serving package of chocolate cheesecake in the extra food box one morning, it's worth carrying it to eat with supper that night.

    5. Fifty four pounds isn't that heavy

    4. Pound cake is good.(You'll get it if you've been)

    3. I don't miss technology when it's not around(Okay, so I already knew that. Still, it was confirmed)

    2. It is the experience of a lifetime, with memories and experiences that will be remembered and shared for years to come

And the number one thing that I learned at Philmont is(drumroll, please):

    I wanna go back!!!

  2. Old enough to get OGE's crack about the professor. That was set in what, the twenties? Wow, you are old!:) Young enough to be under hops. I was born on a day in late March. It may have been nice, it was too long ago for me to remember. Come to think of it, it must have been beautiful. After all, it's when I entered the world! Just kidding. Anyway, I was born in Georgia and have lived in the same town my whole life.

  3. One more verse to The Birdy Song:

    Theeee farmer comes out,

    shotgun in hand,

    BOOM BOOM, BOOM BOOM,

    is heard through the land

    Theeee big birdies fall,

    with only one wing,

    STOMP STOMP, STOMP STOMP,

    now NO birdies sing!

I also like Sons of the Sea, but that's another song for another time

  4. I have two. One, my troop(oops! the troop of which I am a member) went hiking to Providence State Park in Georgia. As we were hiking out the second day, we stopped at several places to look at the canyon(known as the little grand canyon-caused by erosion from bad farming methods). It was almost entirely Georgia red clay, so it had some of the brightest oranges and reds that you will ever see in nature, with some white mixed in, I think it was quartz. It is an amazing view. Second, the family which I was born into has a farm in the country in south Georgia with several ponds. Whenever I'm up early enough, I like to watch the sunrise through the mist over the pond. It will filter down through the trees and reflect on the water. It is very beautiful. Oh, wait, I have three. Also on 'the farm', one of the prettiest sites I will ever see, is a cuvvy of quail flushing. Very awesome.

Good idea for a thread, SA

  5. OGE

    "...only God can truly judge."

I agree that God is the ultimate and final judge, but I also believe that we have the responsibility to judge and punish criminals. Are you suggesting that we should not punish any crimes?

'Leave that murderer alone, only God can truly judge'

'Don't punish that rapist, only God can truly judge'

'That bank robber shouldn't go to jail, only God can truly judge'

'I hate child molestation, but I can't do anything about it, only God can truly judge'

    The list goes on.

To borrow Rooster's quote from earlier in this thread:

"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rules are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of him who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is Gods servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain; he is the servant of God to execute his wrath on the wrongdoer. ROMANS 13 (RSV) 1 - 4"

    -------

Borrowing another quote from another forum, in a thread on capital punishment(not an exact quote but you get the point)...

'I believe that capital punishment should be reserved as a punishment for the most heinous crimes, such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and creating such TV shows as Power Rangers and Teletubbies'

    ------------

All human life is sacred. That is why I, too, am opposed to abortion. I think that Rooster was just using the common example. Would you prefer...

'When I think of the poor 45 year old slob who's been robbed, shot, brutally tortured and beaten to death, somehow I don't see a contradiction when the state decides the perpetrator needs to be executed'?

  6. TXscoutdad,

Welcome to the forums. I am homeschooled, but not a member of a homeschool troop. My homeschool group just started a Cub Scout pack, but no troop yet. I don't know the pack number, but they are chartered to Greater Griffin Christian Home Educators in Griffin Georgia.

  7. Packsaddle,

Your right, anyone who follows the Jewish religion(Judaeism?) would probably disagree with me. But from what I understand they also don't believe that Jesus was and is the one and only Son of God, so I disagree with them on some very major points.

BTW, I would be glad to discuss this with you, but please don't hijack this thread.

On birth control, I have never really thought about it or had an opinion, but you make a good point.

    FOG,

Are you hinting at something... :-)(This message has been edited by bsat4jb)(This message has been edited by bsat4jb)(This message has been edited by bsat4jb)

  8. Packsaddle,

There are parts of Leviticus and the Torah that dictate methods of sacrifice and ceremony to worship God which no longer apply to Christians, or anyone else for that matter, under the New Covenant, where Jesus paid the final sacrifice. But I believe and advocate the following of, to the letter, everthing that wasn't disposed of in the New Covenant.

BTW, you never answered my question about abortion.

  9.

It has been said on this thread that if abortion were illegal, expectant mothers would resort to back alleys and foreign clinics. However, many of these mothers, though they are trying to kill their baby, are law abiding citizens, so making abortion illegal would prevent many abortions.

    ----------

    Packsaddle:

"...where society decides to kill it's members, I do share a responsibilty for such deaths..."

If you do not try to make abortion illegal, then would you not also share the responsibility of those deaths, since you did nothing to prevent them? And no, this line of reasoning does not apply to you being guilty of murder because you didn't stop the killer, being guilty of robbery because you didn't stop the robber, etc. Those are illegal, you cannot do anything else about it(unless you know someone who plans to rob a bank or kill someone and you don't report them).

    Packsaddle, on a side note:

You go along with abortion because it is the status quo. In response, I offer you this: "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong." -Exodus 23:2a

    ----------

On the death penalty, as I look at Leviticus 20, about punishment for sin, I see these:

"must be put to death", "must be put to death", "must be put to death", "must be put to death", "must be put to death", "they must be burned in the fire", "must be put to death".

And that's not even for murder! Criminals should be happy to get off so easy!

  10. Rooster,

I loved your explanation and I totally agree with you.(It's good that you can explain your views that well, I never could have)

Twocubdad, and anyone else who thinks that humans are inherently good:

We are all scouts or scouters here, and we promise every week, on our honor, to do our duty to God. For most of us, that is the Christian God, which means you believe the Bible, as I do. For everyone else, my argument will have no effect.

If you have a Bible, you may recognize this verse(quoted from memory-may be a little off):

"All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness"-Second Timothy 3:16. Basically, God either spoke Himself or inspired writers to write the entire Bible.

Now, if you believe that, you should, by extension, believe all of these:

    Genesis 6:5

    Job 14:4

    Ecclesiastes 7:20

    Jeremiah 13:23

    Jeremiah 17:9

    Mark 7:21-23

    Romans 1:24-25, 29-32

    Romans 3:9-20

    Ephesians 2:1

If that won't convince any Bible-believing Christian, I don't know what will.

P.S. Rooster, can I copy your explanation and use it in other places(i.e., not on the scouter forums)?(This message has been edited by bsat4jb)

  11. Saltheart,

In your first post I saw the name "Bush" twice, and both times you called him "Mr. Bush". No, I am not grouping you with the media, who constantly do the same, but I would like to point out that he is our president, and should be called "President Bush". That said, I agree that he needs to give us assurances of direction and purpose in operation Iraqi Freedom, but I am getting tired of everyone going crazy over two or three soldiers killed. I do value every soldier's life, and granted ever have never been in war or known death other than family members who passed naturally, but that is the soldiers's job. At one point, after coalition forces had captured over 250 miles of Iraq with thirty some-odd soldiers killed, and the media was screaming about tremendous casualties, I wanted to know if anyone remembered how many Americans died to take 250 FEET of Normandy beaches-not to mention Brits and Canadians. There is no comparison.

  12. I'll have to agree with several of you on "Maverick", with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and add "Support Your Local Gunfighter" and "Support Your Local Sheriff", all three with James Garner

NJcubscouter, some of my favorite quotes from MPATHG include:

"'e's got two empty 'alves o' coconut an' 'e's bangin' 'em together!"

    "The Black Knight always triumphs!"

    "But you've got no arms!"

"I'll ask 'im, but I don't think he'll be very keeeeen, ah... 'e's already got one, you see?"

"Well, I didn't know you were called Dennis!"

"Yes! It was the dreaded three headed knight! The most fearsome creature for yards around! For second after second, Sir Robin held his ground, but the onslaught proved to great!...'Brave Sir Robin ran away'. 'No I didn't!' 'He bravely ran away, away!' 'I did no such thing!' 'When danger reared it's ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled, brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin, Sir Robin, he bravely ran away.' (fades into the distance)

"First, thou shalt pullest out the holy pin. Then, thou shalt countest to three. Three shall be the number of thine counting, and the number of thine counting shall be three. No more, no less. Thou shalt not count to four, and thou shalt not count to two, unless thou then proceedeth to count to three. Five is right out. Lobbest then thou thine holy hand grenade, and blow thine foe to tiny bits."

It's pretty sad, I've only seen the movie three times, and I could keep going and going and going...(with accents and everything!)

  13. OGE,

OK, so you got an extreme case of snipe hunting. Pranks are a time

honored tradition of any organization that relishes outdoor activities,

such as BSA. You are right, they should be kept safe, but I'm not

aware of any newspaper articles that have the heading "Naive scout

falls victim to imaginary bird". As for humiliation, scouts (and

people in general) should learn to laugh at themselves, but you're

right, olderscouts should not make the younger ones to feel stupid,

just assure them that they are not the first, and on the next campout,

they can help make sure that they are not the last. Also, older scouts

should not leave younger scouts in the woods all night. If they are

not back by bedtime, go get them.

You grow up the day you have your first real laugh-at yourself.

    -Ethel Barrymore

Blessed is he who can laugh at himself, for he shall never cease to

    be amused.

    -?

    JB

P.S. I ran away because they tried to tape us. The older scouts were

all reprimanded because they tried to tape us. When the "victims" come

back to camp, they get the ribbing that comes standard with a snipe

hunt, no humiliation. All of the younger scouts are in the woods together-the buddy

system. Eamonn said that he and his friends love to pull each other's

legs. If scoutmasters can pull pranks, why not scouts?

  14. OGE,

I never said duct taping younger scouts was a "hoot". No one that i know of was duct taped, and if they were, they were quickly released, and the older scouts soundly reprimanded for their "prank".

    JB

P.S. We don't do the snipe drive, we leave them where they can easily return to camp as soon as they want to.
