  1. This answer came from one of our past forums that I just came across so I take no credit I just wanted to help

One troop has a big 3 by 4 ft box with stained glass copy of the eagle badge. Then there is a light bulb behind each section of the badge and they turn each on as they describe the meaning of each part of the badge.

We have an oversized Eagle medal replica about 4-ft. tall that we hang center stage behind the Eagle Scouts chair. Then we have a set of 4 large flora delis candle holders that we use for a Scout Law ceremony.

The Eagle was made by taking a clipart image of the Eagle medal enlarging it a little and printing it on a sheet of transparency film. then it was put on an overhead projector and projected onto a half sheet of 1/4 inch plywood and traced. We asked an art student at the local high school to paint it for us. She got a grade we got a great Eagle. She painted the Eagle and the banner with the knot. Then a parent sewed the ribbon section. The ring connecting the ribbon and Eagle was cut from plywood as well.

I cut out the shape and traced it onto 1/4 plywood squares 12in X 12in. Then I used a band saw to cut out the shapes. A rectangular block of wood about 2in X 2in and 7 inches long with 3 holes drilled into it to receive candles was glued and nailed to the back. Then a simple base was attached and the whole thing sanded primed and then spray painted metallic gold.

Attach a short length of 1 1/2 PVC pipe (with a cap on the top end) to the back of the banner. It can then be slid over a post in a flag stand.

The candle holders I made. I took a scout emblem from the Internet blew it up to 10 3/4 inches tall, and printed it out on heavy paper stock. We use red, white and blue candles in them.

  4. sorry fotoscout but this story is very true I don't know why but we are going to need to pay for this stuff and wait for national to approve our request (I wouldn't hold my breath on the 90 days)The best bet would be to plan on twice that because we all know the wheels turn very slow in this org.

  5. This is what I was saying in my thread copyright rules about the venuring logo I'm willing to bet this has to do with the truck commercal that has been talked about before and while no BSA logos were used in the commercal they did come very close to stepping on BSA toes with the picture of the boy in uniform. I'm betting soon all Scouters will have a problem with trademarks

  6. Thank you all for your advice on this matter and I understand where you guys are coming from but my situation is all patch companys do not have permition to use the logo. I have been infomed that this will take about 6 mos to correct. This is a new situation that most people do not know about.this also goes for t shirts also

  7. I am sure the scout leader is beating himself up enough about what happened do we really need to quote the g2ss to beat him up more. this is a tragity and I pray for everyone involed including scouts, leaders and family of this scout and we should all think of real life situations that are out of our control before we just jump up and start reading to people from the holy g2ss it would probably help us all out.

  8. I am a little upset right now and I need to vent a little so please bear with me and please give me some thoughts on what you would do in this situation.

I am chairing our Klondike derby with a venturing theme and yesterday I found out that we can not use the ventuing logo on the patches due to copyright rules. Now we have one week to do a patch for a venture themed event without using the venturing logo. How is it that a Venture crew can not use the venturing logo on something as simple as a patch. We decided to use venturing as the theme to get the program more notice now our main bit of advertisement per say has been taken away with 1 week till patches are due.

Thank you for letting me vent a little and look forward to opions on this matter

  9. I've heard alot of cub scout and boy scouts talk about sceduing conflicts with there boys all I can say is try being a venture leader.

My crew has 8 members registered of them 6 are in OA and 2 have aged out of scouts right into venturing (as a side note if you are a SM with boys about to age out please have them meet with a venturing leader in your district)but during the summer we had to take a break due to summer camp (OA needed to be there each week)and with football we could get 2-4 at meetings I have had campouts with 2 crew members now we went and had a great time with those 2 and 3 leaders.I know of a crew who had to put off a campout due to 2 crew members getting married and the whole crew went. I just don't know how to get these numbers up and more consitent. there is just so much in these young adults lives.any sugestions would be great.

  10. sorry about the caps my capslock was on. I'm not upset and maybe the addition thing was an escuse but to be honest I think adults have a right to smoke and it is accepted in my district as long as it's not seen by the youth. I can see the difference in a venture crew member smoking though and just wondered what to do with him. I know adults should not be smoking either but I don't see that changing but what would be fair as the crew member is concered. I also aprciate the opions I get on this site it has really helped me is so many areas since I am so new to scouting and I don't know the rules all I know is what I see other leaders doing and sometimes thats not the best way to learn.

  11. I AGREE THAT ADULTS SHOULD NOT SMOKE ON CAMPOUTS BUT LETS BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES IF YOU TAKE SMOKERS OUT OF SCOUTING THE RANKS WOULD PRETTY SLIM AND I THINK WE ALL KNOW ADULTS SMOKING AT CAMP OUTS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE. AS FOR THE ALCOHOL STATMENT THERE IS A PRESADENT FOR SMOKING NOT DRINKING AND DO YOU REALLY THINK SMOKE INHIBITS YOUR THINKING LIKE ALCOHOL? LETS COMPARE APPLES TO APPLES HERE.IN MY OPTION IF SOMEONE WANTS TO SMOKE FINE JUST DON'T ADDVERTISE IT TO THE YOUTH.I JUST WAS WONDERING HOW TO DEAL WITH A YOUTH WHO SMOKES.

  12. The other day I asked a kid I work with about joining my crew and he seemed interrested the problem is he is 19 and smokes. Now in my Troop several adult leaders including myself smoke but we don't let the youth see us we use this time to dissus topics at campouts away from the kids. How can I handle this situation where this guy is aloud to smoke by law but it would be best if he didn't on camp outs? I know adults shouldn't smoke either but I'm the youngest leader at 29 and we are all to addited to quit (even for a weekend). This guy would be a good adition to my crew but I don't want to give him privalages other crew members don't have like hang with adults during our smoking time.

  13. I agree with Trevorum I am a hiring manager and I have hired people just on the fact they were Eagles. Now grated I work at Wendy's but I know of some companys who will only hire Eagles in my distict. I always tell my boys to put scouting on the resumes if nothing else it will show team work experiance and dedication ( if they but that much effort into a no paying org. what will they do when I pay them.)

  14. The stations are going to circle around the race track so they are very close (all with in a field witch is about 4 blocks big) and I am just doing the compition there will not be any class type things at the station due to the fact that all the scouts should know these things.there will be Webelos leaders at each station to instuct them but they will not be scored but will get partiapation cert. for each patrol

  15. thanx for the lesson on where those sayings come from I love those in my family we call those sayings from a Hillbilly Sage due to my Grandfather who said things like that all the time ( my Favorite is "Happier then a gopher in soft dirt") I use saings like that all the time and have even heard my 8 yr old use them .

Give patrols five minutes to study the site. They are not to talk, but they can touch what they see as long as they leave an item exactly as they found it. Patrols then huddle for 15 min. to prepare a list of all the things they found wrong in the camp. Best list wins. As patrols hand in their lists, add to the contest by giving each a card of questions asking, for example, how many boys were camping? What troops or patrols do they belong to? Etc.

The theme for the sled race is Venturing we are encouraging your units to do a little research on what Venturing is and what it has to offer. Decorate your sled using anything found in your research.

  17. My wife had a unit in this exact situation (remember she is the DE of the District) Here she is:

A Troop in my district was in the same boat. You should be working with your DE to go into the middle schools in the area to do a boy talk. The other responses are great as well bribery is key to the older boys. The Troop had a huge influx of Webelos due to a relationship that they built with a unit htat had no feeder Troop. They had 7 boys form that pack join plus 4 that I had recruited from a nearby school. They are all still active. While it is a challenge for the leadership because there really are not any onlder boys in the unit they are having fun teach these younger youth how to be leaders. It will work for you!! It sounds like you are super dedicaed but remember, you NEVER have to do it alone. Ask you DE for help or the District Commissioner. Do you know who your Troop Commissioner is? find out!! They are supposed to be there to provide you with support. If you do it all on your own you will be left with ScoutMaster burn out and not enjoying yourself. In my opinion, do not think that you have a huge responsibility to go back to the Pack level. We use the "big list of little jobs" to help parents get involved and just standing before a room of parents and asking for help doesn't help. Pull them aside and ask them to do simple things like preparing snack or coordinating Den scheduling etc etc.

Keep upthe great work volunteers like you are pricelss!
