  1. SaxTeacher,

You are correct is saying uniforming is important but making scouts feel special is even more important. I was a Scoutmaster for 10 years during the 1990s. We had a special neckerchief and we wore a green beret. We always got complements and that gave our troop pride. To be honest, we were never told we were not incompliance with uniform policy.

Units that want a special unit number patch are doing so because they want to show price. If you are focused on uniforming standards (which is good) but not on your scouts (which is not good) then I ask if you value your scouts?

I strongly feel that doing whatever possible to create a troop with pride should be on the most important thing. And if that means being a little different, then that is what should be.

  2. I want to thank everyone for the very nice comments.

After a busy summer, I am again at home. I do have many of the knots and Venturing patches still available. Please contact me if you are interested. I will sell what I have but will not be having more made.

    All the best,

  3. This discussion has gotten nasty along the way. It is sad that some feel that is the scouting way.

I certainly don't feel that I have authority to create knots. This one knot was created because of demand and the desire to recognize others that are now in the Venturing program. Certainly if you think it is not right, don't buy any but you don't have to be nasty to the people that would like the right to recognize others in the fashion they choose.

With respect to the business aspect, I do make enough to pay for my website. It costs me $70 a month. But if you have looked at my full site, you will see that I do my best to bring a lot to the scouting and venturing communities. My goal is to make sure information is shared, not to be critical of others.

Take the ideas that you like and create a better program for the youth you work with. Forget the ideas you don't like but don't bash others along the way.

    All the best,

  4. Some people have lost the vision of Venturing. That vision includes thinking outside of the box. That means crews don't have to always follow the same uniform rules as Boy Scouts. For example, the Powder Horn and Kodiak dangles can be worn on either pocket in Venturing. (Direct from Bill Evans)

For pins like the GS Gold Award, crews can decide if they can be worn on the uniform or not. To me this was a non-issue. I encouraged the wearing such pins. Of course the uniform guide is not going to cover these issues because they are crew decisions.

Venturing is an exciting program. Not bound by the traditions of the Boy Scout rules.

  5. As a Scoutmaster for 10 years and an Explorer/Venturing Advisor since 1992, I have to say one of the most enjoyable thing I have done is recognize others in any way I could. To say that one should not recignize a person for earning a high award outside of a BSA program is sad. Does that mean we should not recognize youth for earning the religious award because the program is not administered by the BSA?

Get off your personal soapbox and think about what you can do for others. Recognition is one of those things whether it is the Gold award, Campfire Boys and Girls, etc.

Bottom line, what have you lost by recognizing others? Nothing, we have gained a great deal.

  6. I don't normally believe in making up knots but I have several girls in my Crew that have or will be receiving the Gold Scout Gold Award. I asked if they would like a square knot to wear on their Venturing uniform and the answer was yes.

Taking the colors from the Gold Award badge, the knot would be light blue and gold with a gold border on a Venturing green background.

I'm interested in your thoughts; please let me hear from you.

  7. I happen to come across this discussion list and I think you will be pleased to know that I will have my web site on Eagle Scout medals completed by April 1 and will link it in for the scouting community at that time. You will be able to find the link on my BSA Badge History site - http://www.sageventure.com/history/

  8. While working on the Ranger shooting sports elective, you are required to complete one of the shooting disciplines. However, if you go beyond the basic requirement and complete five, you can earn the Venturing Shooting Sports Outstanding Achievement Award.

I have the award application on my links page at the botton of that page. The links page address is http://www.sageventure.com/venturing/links.htm'>http://www.sageventure.com/venturing/links.htm
