Well, an update...

In asking the SM and one of the Board members, it appears that in being asked about the know, he could not get it tied around his waist.

And they continued to ask him to try, them they moved on to CPR, asking him what the A,B,C,D's were, but stating that they are not in his Scout Handbook.

He knew Airway, Breathing, Circulation, but had no clue on D.

They continued to ask him until he said he gave up because he had no idea what the D stood for. The board felt this is VERY IMPORTANT info and he should know it.

He was then asked to orient a local map with the Scout hut, etc. At this point he was not in the best of states.

The CC when I talked to her (she was a board member) said he WAS told what he needed to do, but when explained that he was so upset he didn't remember half of it she couldn't understand, because they TOLD him in the BOR...

oh well, the SM is supposed to talk the Board Chair to see what is what.

I agree that the BOR should not retest. The Scout was tested by the SM when the requirements were signed off.

The Scout (my son) does know the Oath and Law.

BBNG, thank you, that is good advice. I will explaine it to my son and let him proceed with calling the SM and inquiring about the letter. Thank you.

As far as I know, the Board is looking at this as he needs a complete BOR again..? but as I have read, and has been stated here, the BOR should only be on what he needed improvement on...but without anything written, who knows what that could be..

And what is the D in the A,B,C,D's of CPR? as ?I stated I know the A,B,C's and took the CPR course at summer camp, but do not remember a D???

I am an ASM with my sons Troop. My son had a BOR last night for 1st Class. When he returned from the BOR (held in the Church, Scout Hut is out in Parking lot) he was very upset.

He said he had failed the BOR. He said the reasons were that the Board, one Committee member specificly, asked him Oath, Law, favorite knot, then asked him to tie a bowline around his waist and he could not tie it, then we was quized on first aid and CPR specificly. The one Board memmer asked him about the A,B,C,D (?) of CRP which he was not clear on. (I know Airway, Breathing, Circulation, ? what is D for?)

My son was told it is important to know but that it is not in his Scout Book.

After deliberation, the Board advised my son that some boys were not ready to advance yet and he should try back in a few weeks.

I know being the parent I am taking a little different look at this, but isn't the BOR, when declining advancement required to give the Scout specific items to improve on and set a specific date for another attempt?

My son may not have been as prepared as he should have been though he did study all weekend. And I know, as I said, I may be over-reacting, but my son does not have a clear and specific knowledge of why he was not approved for advancement or what to do next.

You thoughts are appreciated..

The Troop I am with went to summer camp last week.

We had 9 boys and 3 adults.

A typical day was everyone goes down to the parade field for flag raising then breakfast.

After breakfast we all went back to camp and got things needed for the first three classes of the day. First year Scouts had TNT (new Scout essentials, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class skills.)

We tried to keep one adult in camp because if something happens that is where the administration is going to look for leaders. We would have two adults wander around checking in on the boys in their different classes. This helps show them we ARE interested and not just hanging out at camp.

Everyone goes to lunch straight from classes, then back to the camp for thirty minutes to an hour.

Then it is back to classes for the last 3 of the day.

A few of the older boys did not have a sixth period class so they could work on observations for classes (Enviromental Science, etc..)

We adults would make sure one of the three of us was back at camp before the end of classes to supervise as the scouts came back to camp. Then we would dress in class A's for Flag lowering and dinner.

This is my sons first year in Boy Scouts.

I am a registered ASM, and have signed up to be a MB Counselor for many Merit Badges.

I have avoided Counseling my own sons Merit Badges because I didn't want him to be questioned on this when he gets higher in rank.

I haven't found anything written in stone saying you cannot, but I did not want to cause problems for him later.

This is pretty much the response I was expecting.

The reason as explaned to us in the class is for Youth Protection, (although the air bag issue is a good reason also.)

As I said it may be a local guideline. I feel it has some merit, but was just looking to see if it went into depth at all.

NEGA Council

Hello all. I have a question.

At summer camp this past week, I was attending a Trek Safely class and was informed that when traveling by automobile the front passanger seat is only to be occupied by a child of driver or anouther adult. The seat cannot be occupied by any other boy in the Troop.

I asked the instructor if he had a copy of this policy or a publication number. He said it is in the "new" Driving Pamphlet.

I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this policy?

This is not really a problem, but we do have a few leaders without boy's in the Troop and we have access to a Church van, and this situation may come up.

One good question raised in the class I was in was what about a standard cab pickup truck with bench seating for three?

This may just be a Council Policy, but figured I would throw it out there.
