  1. I def try my best to not seem as if I am desperate because I know it can look bad. It may be a problem I dont notice maybe with my tone I dont know for sure.

2.5 years I have spent lookong for a job other than our farm where I get paid in the form of place to live and lights.

By asking about why I wasnt selected I was just hoping to be answered in a way such as not having had as much experience as someone else or whatever. I was just told they were gonna go in anothed direction.

  2. Im willing to go almost anywhere for the job there arent any openings here and ive tried several states so far.

I had talked to two other councils one was interested but cldnt view my papers. Then said the hiring was being pushed back. The other one I havent gotten to talk with the scout exec because he has been running their summer camp.

  3. My interview went pretty well. After my interview I was allowed to proceed on to interview with some of the volunteers. While there I felt like I made a pretty decent impression and felt I presented myself and ideals well.

I do have to mention this however. While waiting to speak with the volunteers I saw the other 2 canidates and was pretty surprised by their priorities. They were both in a frat together and one said he hoped to get the job so he could be close enough to make it to all the frat meetings that were held.

I hope that I get picked because I dont have other obligations to be worried with he just did not act like he was going to focus on the DE posistion

  4. I am 24 years old and I dont mind working long hours. I went to college to get into a business type field doing work alot like this. I would much rather do this then spend the same hours standing in one place pushing a button at the factory going home everynight hating what I do. The pay isnt as good as the factory but money isnt everything.

  5. It just seems like when asked Why are you interested in working for the BSA or question like that you can't say I would like to help children. What other reason is there to be part of an organization that is made for kids if the end reason isn't the kids then I really don't understand the objective of the organization as a whole. The BSA isn't out to make profits. What am I supposed to tell them.

  6. I just feel that no matter what you do in a business/corporation you have an affect on the end result. If I never saw a scout outside of the time of year recruitment is done I would still know I am benefiting them in some way. For every donation earned or person spoken to it helps promote scouting which helps the kids.

  7. That is the thing I know that my work with the actual scouts would be very very little that most is with volunteers and that is what I was trying to get to during my answer. I was just meaning that I wanted to do whatever I could to help everything go as smoothly as possible to better allow the volunteer leaders to do what they are supposed to be doing and that is prepare a scout for life. I honestly feel that I am a better person because of the values I was taught I see people I know everyday that didnt have that and could have used it and believe that properly working with kids now will better this country as a whole.

  8. I hope that he was just simply trying to make sure I understood what he wanted me to understand. The rest of the interview before that seemed to go well and after that there was only a bit more before our time was up as he had other engagements.

I have been trying other places as well but my area is awful as far as job market is concerned. Here itbis either fast food retail like walmart dollar stores and the like or 12hrs a day 6 to 7 days a week in the factory. I dont mind working long hours but I have worked hard to stay out of the factories here because they treat employees like animals. I cant even get an interview at companies else where and the district level job for bsa if notjing else would build great experience for the future if I ended up not enjoying the posistion

  9. During an interview yesterday for a DE opening I was attempting to explain that I feel that everything that is done by both professionals and by volunteers should be done to best support the individuals that are the scout. That I believe that would be the first step to motivating a team letting them know I would be there for the scouts first and foremost.

The guy I was interviewed by didn't let me finish as soon as I said that everything would be for the scouts he cut me off to explain that DEs also have to take into account the family because they are influenced through the scout as well. Which I understand and was ready to mention that I understood scheduling conflicts work hours and things of this nature that had to be taken into account but he moved on and left my words unused. Did I do wrong and completely shatter my opportunity yesterday or am I making to much of this?

  10. I am in the process of doing so.

I was told by the employment dept at the national office not to contact councils directly and it was also in bold print on my acceptence letter.

I wish there was a better way to know about openings. When I first started the process I had very high hopes the guy that interviewed me said that it was believed that there was gonna be a shortage of DEs within the next 5 years.

  11. It is the SRI exam I took it a few months back. It isn't hard and really just asks you basic questions. I was told that very few people have a problem passing the exam and to not stress over it. It really asks you basic things that have probably already been explained or brought up stuff like do the hours bother you are you organized rate that on a scale blah blah. It was very easy the only thing about it is it is timed so don't walk away answer the questions but I felt that it was easy if you think about what you have to do for the job and if you actually believe the things the scouts teaches.

    Hope you have no problems.

  12. Well I believe I will take the chance and start notifying councils that I find with openings so that I dont have to wait as long hopefully.

Im not married but want to be. I dont believe that the hours will be a problem because all the places around my area that pay more than 9$ per hour all work 10 or 12hrs a day 6-7days a week. They are all factories.

  13. Thanks for your quick replies.

To answer some of the questions brought up:

No I have no friends that are pros and don't know anyone currently even involved. Also the impression I was under was I could contact councils and if one of them wanted to interview me then I wouldn't be able to contact another council until I was not going to be considered.

The council I grew up in is the one in Kentucky that is merging, this is also where I did my application and interviews for approval.

The website still does have a list of councils with an opening, but all it does is list a place and you have to go find the council information for that opening. I was considering contacting the councils anyway but was afraid that I may have my approval revoked for doing so.

I am having a hard time finding work right now I didn't even know that BSA had professional positions until last year. I just graduated college in Dec. 2009. I am about to be 24 years old and when I saw these openings I really felt drawn to it, but I don't believe I am being given a fair chance.

  14. So back in December I went through the process of filling out the application and going through the interviews to be accepted by the national council to be included as an approved candidate. I was told that once I was approved I would be put into a pool of applicants to be chosen from. I was also told that any council with an opening I found I would be able to contact and tell them I was approved etc. Well after my application getting lost and spending 4 months trying to get it found which didn't happen and so I redid the app and resubmitted it working with the national council so they would get it personally.

Well now that I am have been approved and I am in the pool of applicants I am told by nationals that I am not allowed to contact councils with openings or contact councils to inquire if they have an opening.

What am I supposed to do to be picked from the pool so that I have a chance? It seems that I had a better chance getting an interview before being approved. Any advice appreciated.
