Better still , can you provide a syallabus for the LLT course? Is it experimental or has your District/Council used it for awhile? Is this something new that National is Beta testing in your neck of the woods (US)?

We are in the process of calendaring some training for the Fall and into 2003 and this maybe something to look at very closely.

My apologies. I know better but my wayward typing fingers just got in a rut and kept typing "JLTC" over and over again!

Of course JlTC stands for ...Conference (Council) and JLT stands for troop and district training just as NJLIT stands for National Junior Leader in Training.

I'm afraid I was more interested in making a distinction between the three levels and perhaps the ages/ranks of the scouts taking part in those different levels of training than I was with the initials used for those levels.

I have staffed at all three levels and their content is indeed very different.

Remember also that different regions of the US call their JLTC by different names. White Stag, Brownsea and Marin Sierra come to mind from my time in California.

Now that I've cleared up that mistake in typing...

Sorry Bob, I thought you might know Philmont's short hand. 6 for June. 29 for the day of the month and thirteen days later on July 12 the Trek ends. (ie 629F - #2 means there are 2 crews coming)

Just a thought. We all throw out these acronyms like "JLTC" but don't always indicate exactly what we are talking about.

Are you referring to "troop" JLTC or "district" JLTC or maybe "council" JLTC???

For newly crossed over Webelos a district or counncil JLTC may well be over their heads (content and maturity wise) but a troop JLTC would be right up their alley to encourage and prepare them for their scout positions in the future.

Here in Texas, where I am from, they treat Council JLTC much like Woodbadge where you are expected to have taken SM Basics and worked awhile at your position before taking it.

Could be the same for the scouts and JLTC.

Right you are - a banner is a piece of cloth that hangs on a wall or between 2 poles. The one I have is longer than it is wide and has a silk screened image of the Eagle Medal on it (maybe 18 inches by 2 1/2 feet). Opps, I guess I should have put that in metric, shouldn't I? The banner itself is made of nylon fabric, easily folded and light to mail.

That rather lengthy "ode to a Boy Scout" was from the first edition of the Handbook for Boys, copyright 1911. There was an edited, less poetic version published in the revised Handbook for Boys in 1927 - and no my "grey" does not go back that far although at times I may feel that way!

Another Scouting Forum suggested I use the Silver Dollar Eagle as a presentation at an Eagle COH but didn't have the story that went with the presentation. They thought it had something to do with an aviator who worn it in their uniform OR a homeless man who had almost rubbed the Eagle off the coin. Does this strike a cord in anyone's memory???

Ed, This a little off the thread track but as long as this was mentioned let's tell it all. I do believe that there is one other award a Scouter or Boy Scout can wear on his uniform from Cubs and that is the Religious Emblems Award Square Knot. I have seen adults with the purple background and silver knot on their shirts with either a cub or scout device in the middle to denote the program he earned it under.

I am not aware of anyone attending the Training Center BUT I do have a Crew Trekking at Philmont late June through early July. Could we arrange a pick up of materials at Headquarters when the Crew arrives? They will not have their own transportation (arriving by bus) so if you had some way of getting it to the Headquarters Bldg I'm Sure Mark Anderson (Program Director)could see that they got it.

After reading all the replys I just have to get into this discussion. My personal belief is that if you are going to wear patches do it for the level of the program you are currently involved with. For those of us with scouts in Cubs and Boy Scouts we will probably need two jackets or two blankets or - you get the idea I'm sure.

My older son took an old red blanket and cut it like a serape (I helped him bind the neck) and proceeded to cover it with patches from his 7 years of Boy Scouting which encompassed the USA and Europe.

He can't wait until it gets cold to wear it to meetings, camp-outs, district events, O/A etc. It is always a conversation starter and it keeps him warm as well at night, works as a pillow, covered an auto accident victim (the stains are still there - even after cleaning) but they too tell a Scouting story. He is now into campfire story telling and can always find one by looking at a patch.

I have also heard of a thing called "the brag rag". Sew your patches for the year onto a piece of cloth that will fit the top part of your back pack flap and figure out a way to attach it to your backpack. Change out the "brag Rag" each year and by the time you turn 18 you should have maybe 7 of these which in turn can be sewn onto a blanket/quilt/banner and displayed at the Eagle Court of Honor.

Ed, Not knowing how old or young your troop is but assuming they have been chartered by the same church (or not) over the years you might give consideration to using a little Troop Scouting History during next year's presentation. People come and go from churches and there may not be anyone there any longer who was there when it all started and "remembers when"...

Start with Troop 1 was chartered to (name of church) in (month, day, year) with (number of scouts), Mr. (name) was the first Scoutmaster. Through the years we have had (number) Scoutmasters lead our Scouts. We now have (number) scouts registered and active in the troop program under my direction. Troop (number) has been fortunate to have produced (number) of Eagle Scouts over the years, our most current one (name) who is here to assist in the presentation of this Charter today as well as our newest Scout, (name)who you all may see here several years from now as an Eagle himself.

You could go on and ask for everyone in the congregation who has ever been active in Scouting to stand and be recognized and if they have been inactive invite them back into the Brotherhood of Scouting.

Thank the church and the congregation for their support in the past and in the future to come, etc...(or let your Unit Commisioner do this)

Now you're cooking. Thank you so very much. I think I can actually make this eagle prop now with these directions. Does it actually hang or is it on a stand of some sort. We have nowhere that we can easily hang something in the church where we hold our Eagle COH's but if it could be adapted for use on a stand of some sort...?

I also came across a reference in another forum about the called song "Scouting Thunder" for bagpipes (of which we happen to have a player or two). This is also the kind of thing I am looking for and I am most greatful for the added information (such as the correct title of the music). I hope there are more people out there who will reply to my inquiry.

I would advise you to, first of all, speak with your District Executive (DE) as they are actively involved in chartering units etc. You are looking at transferring your unit to another CO (this has been done in the past and the unit has kept it's number and tenure "in Scouting" not necesssarily with the CO) not reform as a new unit with a new CO.

This happens many times, for many different reasons (ie Church remodeling and can't accomodate a unit for a long period of time, Community organization grows out of step with Scouting, etc) Your DE should be able to "smooth the waters" so to speak with the current CO, although it sound like they truly won't be upset if you find another "home" elsewhere. The DE can also investigate and determine if the "proposed new CO" really qualifies as a CO in the eyes of the Council. Good Luck.

I am looking for ideas for Eagle Scout Court of Honor Props. Something a little different than what you read about in USSP and MacScouter etc. Anyone have some ideas and/or photos?? Scripts that are different would also be appreciated.
