A quick google search of "grey paper laser printer" brings up the following, which may or may not be of help:

Grey Background

If the page is contaminated with toner on the blank areas of the page the paper will have a faintly grey appearance. This is normally caused by excess toner because the print density setting is too high.

Most small laser printers have a print density control, either a knob or a setting on the control panel. Try reducing the print density setting to remove the grey background.

Google the dreaded grey paper problem and you'll see that another common feature of this printer is that after a while, it prints a light grey background over the entire page. It's like the black ink cartridge cannot fully turn off. I'm reading thru the HP bulletin boards and it appears everyone has a varient of this problem after a while. Always after warantee.

Also note that the printer counts pages and will tell you that a cartridge is empty after a set # of sheets. Then the printer absolutely refuses to print another page until a new cartridge is installed. This happens when the cartridge is about 60-40% full. Everyone uses the over ride on the panel to get by this cutoff.
