What are you doing for 9/11?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if your Troop or Pack is doing anything special for the 10th anniversary of 9/11?

I think our Troop will provide multiple flag color guards at our affiliated churches on 9/11. Also out Troop is involved with a new memorial that has part of the WTC beams in it that will be dedicated on 9/9. I will probably go to that since it will be a big deal locally; gotta use some vacation time from work to do so.

Just curious what folks are doing, if any.

Here is our local Springfield, Ohio event.

Join an historical occasion at Freedom Grove Park in Urbana, corner of U.S Route 68 and State Route 55, where a steel beam from the World Trade Center is being mounted and flanked by a pair of large stars for dedication as a monument.

Boy Scouts are being asked to line the walkway and semicircle around the permanent display prior to the ceremony. Organizers have ordered 500 American flags so each Scout can hold one as visitors walk in.

Scouts will need to be in uniform and will need to arrive between 12:45-1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11. The ceremony is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Scouts will be dismissed after the Pledge of Allegiance to sit with their parents or unit for the dedication ceremony which is to last just about an hour.

Additional Information:

1. This service is being performed in coordination with the Grapevine 9/11 Memorial Committee. Service hour slips will be handed out to every Scout who finishes their time at guard.

2.There is a specific way boys will be asked to relieve one another. It is simple.

4. At least four Scouts and/or Scouter will be standing as honor guard in 30 minute shifts from 7:30AM to 8:45 PM.

5. The honor guard begins at 7:00 AM so this will give us a short time to set up before the ceremony begins and the bell is rung at 7:46:42 the time the first plane hit. This is part of American history we can have the Scouts be participate in.

6. Any member of the Scouting family is welcome to attend the Memorial at any time during the day. They will have events on and off during the day.

7. Do recognize that there will be many dignitaries and media there throughout the day so that Scouts must be well- behaved at all time at the site whether standing guard or not. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC are some of the news media that will be there. There will also be some political dignitaries attending.

This is a great way to get some positive images for the public.

8. The Grapevine Committee does have a website: www.911filghtcrewmemorial.org but SIGN UP will be through

Our Troop has been asked to provide a Color Guard for the opening ceremony for this event. Several of our Scouts will also be participating in the climb.

From the Dunwoody Crier:

Stair Climb Honoring 9/11 Fallen. If youre wondering how youre going to get your exercise on September 10 or how you might recognize the 10th annivesary of the tragedies of 9/11, consider this: The Manhattan Condominiums at Perimeter Way is inviting all to participate in its 26-story memorial stair climb.

Open to the public, the climb is coordinated to honor the 343 New York firefighters and 60 police officers who perished in the twin tower tragedies.

Proceeds from the $25 registration fee will benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. T-shirts will be awarded upon completion.

We have no special plans to commemorate 9/11. We will be on our annual planning camp out and I expect that there will be some mention of the events at the morning religious service.

Our troop meets just a few miles from the Pentagon. 9/11 has been very close to us for the last 10 years. Sunday won't be particularly different.
