Quick Troop Service Project Idea: DTV Switch

Unless Congress changes the date, TV stations switch to digital broadcasts on February 17th. Many senior citizens in your community have no idea what to do to make the switch, even if they bought the right stuff. About every boy in your Troop could help seniors with the switch in a matter of minutes (might help to get trained by a local TV sales store or TV station). If you're looking for a high-impact and high-visibility service project, let your community newspaper, radio and TV station know your Troop is ready to help your community make the switch!

I don't know why Congress got involved anyway. I missed that part in the Constitution about the power to regulate cable I suppose.

Actually, you're too late for Maine. Several stations have already made the switch and killed their analog broadcast including the local FOX affiliate and PBS.

Our area fire departments are offering to facilitate the switch. Gives them a chance to warn people about extension cords under carpets, heating their homes with open oven doors, checking smoke detectors, etc.

 

But, that said, it does sound like a good idea. I think it probably should have started awhile back in order to get the most bang for your buck, but if you're already doing it, great!
