Looking to purchase a bugle

Recommended Posts

Our troop is looking to purchase a bugle. Any suggestions on what to look for when purchasing? Dealers? Brand names? Suggestions? We are not looking for the very top of the line bugle but one that a scout could learn on and play.

Thanks

ebay is always a good place. I purchased a used BSA bugle from the 1960s in good shape (no dings, just tarnished) for $40.00 plus shipping from there. There are several varieties (valved & valveless / different keys), so make sure you do your research. In a pinch a trumpet will do also; just set it on B-flat and do not use the valves.

Also try www.scoutbugle.com. I purchased a bugle from them for my son. He is a very good trumpet player, but I am not about to let him bring a very expensive instrument to camp. Through Scoutbugle I was able to purchase a very playable bugle for under $50.00. A top of the line instrument? No. But if it gets some dents or scratches from camp experience, so be it. You don't need to spend a bucket of bucks on a horn to play taps.
