All Council and District Activities Canceled

Recommended Posts

Just got this.

As always, your safety and the safety of all our members, volunteers, and employees is our top priority. We know there are questions and concerns about how COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus, could affect local Scouting programs. After much discussion by National Capital Area Council’s Executive board, it has been decided that all in-person Council and District events, activities, and meetings between Friday, March 13 and Thursday, April 30, 2020 will be postponed or cancelled. This decision has been made out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health of our Scouts, Scouters, and their families.

Further, NCAC strongly suggests that individual Scout units follow this policy. The final decision on continued unit activities will be the responsibility of the unit committee in consultation with their chartered organization and, in some cases, their meeting facilities until such time as new guidance is issued by the CDC.

We strongly encourage that districts, units, and council committees consider using technology to continue with as many of their normally scheduled meetings and events as possible. Free or low-cost options include freeconferencecall.com, Skype, and Google Hangouts.

At this time, the Marriott Scout Service Center and Scout Shops remain open for business. If you have meetings at the MSSC, please consider if they can be handled via phone or email instead of in-person.

We will be distributing additional information later this afternoon. In the meantime, if you have any questions please let me know.

similar notice for us, but only through the end of March, with re-evaluation to come for possible extension.  I've suggested to the units they should think about having at least one virtual meeting before the end of the month, just to check in with each other and think about planning for April.  Not sure what they will do, but I'd rather pay for a month of Webex that try and get Skype overloaded with too many users on at once.

We plan on having our mulch delivery Friday and Saturday of next week.  We're pretty much at a point of no return.  We can keep people in small groups as there's one truck driver and a chase driver with scouts and usually another adult.  Typically there will be groups of 6-8 people.

We usually cater it with BBQ Saturday evening, but I think we'll tell people they need to bring their own lunch and dinner.

We're currently planning on canceling everything else as directed.

Update on the Coronavirus and Impact on Program Delivery

March 12, 2020

Officials at the California Department of Public Health announced new recommendations late Wednesday night to curtail the spread of COVID-19: large gatherings should be postponed or canceled across the state until at least the end of March.

The Orange County Council, including all of our properties, continues to monitor the evolving COVID-19 situation. Based on this new information, the Council will enforce the following guidelines effective immediately:
  • Council and District activities of 250 or more will be postponed and rescheduled for dates after March 31st. This includes District Camporees scheduled in March and programs at our four properties including Newport Sea Base and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center.
  • Smaller events can proceed only if organizers can implement social distancing of 6 feet per person. If the social distance cannot be accommodated, meetings/activities must be postponed or cancelled. The use of conference calls is highly recommended. Advisers to District and Council meetings will contact their committees with instructions for meetings scheduled this month.
  • Roundtables will continue for March 12. Social Distancing will be enforced, and we strongly request any individual who feels sick to not attend.
  • Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people while also following social distancing guidelines.
  • Some charter partners and unit meeting locations have blocked access to their facilities for the time being. Please contact your location to verify access and timeline. The information from the State recommends limiting access until March 31st. Should your unit be blocked, we recommend that families continue to use their handbooks at home to continue the program and update their leaders on their progress.

The Orange County Council is committed to providing a safe environment for our members and will continue to update you as information becomes available.

Council Events

All Council and District events have been postponed until April 13, 2020. All offices and Scout Shops will be closed to foot traffic, but will respond via email or phone calls as needed. We will reevaluate the situation on April 13.

Should you have any questions or concerns about a specific upcoming event or activity, please reach out to the event organizer or district executive. We will do everything we can to answer your question using the information available to us.

Unit Meetings

Effective immediately, all face-to-face unit meetings are to be delayed until Monday, April 13, 2020. We will reevaluate the situation on April 13.

Please feel free to use technology to host virtual meetings and encourage parents to use this opportunity to teach their kids the lessons that they would be learning during their Scout meetings.
