Supporting the Patrol Method - as Unit Commissioner

Recommended Posts

Unit Commissioners are assigned from the district and in theory every unit should have a commissioner. The job involves helping out and being there to offer advice, so yes every unit probably "needs" one.

Now, that role should be advice instead of lead as they are not part of the unit. They shouldn't sit in for the CC.

All that said, as I recall your previous comments, you probably need a UC to address some leadership issues, though the UC might not be doing it in the best way.

My best advice for you, @The Latin Scot, is to just show up and have fun. But there's a bit more to my advice. If you really want to help you first have to listen and learn. Find out where they are, w

Could be that your district has assigned someone due to the above statement.  A unit of 90 Scouts that includes 20 girls is operating outside of the separate units for boys and girls rule.

...   This person has put himself 'in charge'.   He sat in for the Committee Chair when she has been unable to attend...is that kosher?   ...  He is no longer a COR.   He has represented the 'Church', never the Troop....How has this happened?

There must be more to the story.  Did the CC ask the unit commissioner to run the mtg?  There is no path for a unit commissioner or former COR to take charge without the unit putting them in that position.

Hi.  Please explain the details of why this Unit is operating 'outside of the separate units for boys and for girls rule?

I am not totally familiar with the wording.

We are still waiting for a return call from the District to inform us as to the 'why' of this?    The Unit did NOT put him in any position, actually were hoping that fhe forced move to a new Chartering Organization would have 'lost him'...

To put risk in perspective, most foodborne illness can be traced to food preparation. Cross contamination and/or sanitation related to the food preparer.

Camp chefs not washing hands after using the latrine, and/or cutting tomatoes right after cutting raw chicken is most likely. Not using chemical rinses in cleaning the pots/pans in the woods is the least likely cause of foodborne illness.

Ecoli et al does not spontaneously appear into a pot or utensil with leftover food fragments. It must be transferred. This happens during food prep. No matter how well the cooking implements were cleaned, failure to follow safe serve food prep makes any cleaning regimen futile.

I have a bit of experience with Microbiology, and it is generally held that improper hand washing is the major source of such bugs causing illness.   Folks must learn to wash and wash well...in between the fingers, etc.

to add:   The Church with the assistance of this COR...gets the blame for not following the regulations with adding a Girls' Troop....not the Troop.   .The thinking was:   out of the blue, by the way, this:   IF we Charter it, then WE own it.  IF we own it, then we must RUN it.   No body has any interest in RUNNING it, so we must get rid of it. !     After 50 yrs. of harmonious working together...this is what just jumped out at us.   This Troop doesn't need outside help from anywhere...they are exemplary...but the word 'OWN' has ruined it.        They planned to RUN the Girls' Unit as well...but realized THEY would need to find or to be...more volunteers.   They required the two check signers be Church Members....and they didn't feel there were any more people in the Congregation who would step forward to make it work.     It was the Church who announced how IT was going to be...with the strong implication that you either do it or you are out........

The way the original post read was "Our Troop is 50 years old...exemplary...90 Scouts including about 20 girls..."

Troops can be linked; same charter org., same committee, but cannot be a troop of 90 scouts, 20 of whom are girls.  There can be a troop of 70 boys and a separate troop of 20 girls who meet the definition of linked troops and do some activities together.
