He is preparing for his Eagle, but we as parents are still so confused about his process on becoming an Eagle Scout, please help? -Son advanced to Life rank in July Question: Does he have 6 months from July to plan and execute his Eagle Project? Follow-up Question: Is he eligible to receive his Eagle Scout Award in January if all Life rank requirements are met? Thank you for reading and thanks in advance for any help! The six months is the minimum time he needs to be a Life Scout. The requirements are that while a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. Also the scout needs a position of responsibility, all the required and number of merit badges to complete the rank. Does your unit have a Life to Eagle coordinator that can assist or give guidance? No, his eagle project is independent of the 6 months. Well, it's a bit more complicated than that. He could complete all of his Eagle requirements in the 6 month minimum except for the last one, which is the board of review. BTW, that one does not need to be completed before his 18th birthday but it does need to be before 3 months after his 18th birthday. The reason for the 3 months is because it can take a month to set it all up and 3 is plenty of overhead. So, to answer your question, probably no. Link to post Share on other sites

Earning Eagle during a scout's first six months at life is hard, I can think of the following reasons: Scouts usually save the required merit badges they like the least until last. Just like the rest of us, boys hate starting on something that they don't like. Often, those MBs have requirements to do daily over over a period of time. Or, there might be one seemingly simply requirement, but a boy might have difficulty finding a day in a busy schedule to complete it. Life scouts should be contacting counselors and earning MB's independently -- a couple a month. Many find it hard to get into that routine. More is expected from a Life scout in his position of responsibility. If he is neglecting his PoR, a responsible SM will have him take a break from that position, and give him a few weeks to decide if he wants to try that one again or maybe start a different one. This can happen more than once in the leadership development cycle. Eagle projects involve getting approvals from multiple people, and then mobilizing a team of folks to help him with the project. If the scout hasn't had a project in mind (one that really involve leading a team of folks to get something done), he may take several cycles of planning before he has approval to mobilize that team. Post-modern nomadic teens are vulnerable to a lot of moral challenges like drug and alcohol use, pregnancy, vulgarity, risky driving and other illegal activity. Life scouts with these issues (if they survive them) often negatively influence troop life, sometimes warranting suspension. Older scouts may have come to the conclusion that the religious are in error and that, as newly minted atheists, they have no duty to God. Many of these things can be handled, and resolved, leading to real personal growth. (That's what we're after, really.) But not in six months time. That said, many scouts don't have any of these road blocks (maybe they worked through them while at Star rank) and can easily wrap up all of their Eagle requirements in six months. 1 Link to post Share on other sites
SSF 57 Posted September 4, 2018 Share Posted September 4, 2018 Father of two Eagle Scouts here. My younger son just completed his Eagle Board of Review in July. I'm also an Eagle myself. Yes, the requirements and application process for Eagle are a bit more involved than the other ranks. Not sure which, if any, required merit badges your son still needs to complete, but do bear in mind that Personal Fitness, Family Life and Personal Management each have a roughly three month record keeping requirement; i.e. your son cannot complete any one of those three badges in less than the roughly three month time frame. Regarding the project, my advice to your son would be to, ideally, do something that's personally meaningful to him and to choose a project large enough in scope that it will meet the leadership demonstration requirement to be approved but not so large that it can't be managed and completed effectively. If he has successfully met all of the requirements, then yes, he can earn Eagle in six months time from the date he had his Life Scout Board of Review. That said though, very few scouts complete Eagle in six months and for those who do, it's generally because they have no other choice because they are about to turn 18. The minimum time your son can be a Life Scout working on Eagle Scout is 6 months. The maximum time is one day before his 18th birthday. Unless your son is 17 1/2, he has more than 6 months to complete his Eagle. If he advanced to Life, he has already met all Life Requirements. Theoretically, he can earn his Eagle requirements before January, and become an Eagle then, but unless he was 17 1/2 or close in July, I wouldn't recommend that. Link to post Share on other sites
