Other projects rather than always picking up trash

Recommended Posts

Our PLC limits "cleanup" projects to just one - spring town cleanup with a focus on winter storm debris.  Picking up after Mother Nature is ok, other people not so much.

This corn stalk snow fence service project in Iowa, particularly the video, reminded me about that.

Our troop has an annual river clean-up project each year, and a few other Service projects that stay consistent. But the others they vary and change up based on what interests the youth. The great thing is that the Scouts have really latched on to certain service projects and schedule them each year.

Camping on private property offers opportunities. Ask the landowner. Sometimes digging out the debris in a culvert, or moving cut limbs from a felled tree. It is also a fantastic opportunity for the scouts to call the landowner to ask for permission. These are the building blocks which a life scout will use when their eagle project comes around. The EP should not be the first time a scout calls an adult to ask how he can be of service.

My scouts have maintained the Scatter Garden at the local cemetery for a while.

They also help at the CO's annual church fundraiser dinner (including paying for their own meal).

They help with the CO's neighborhood summer festival.

They ring bells for the Salvation Army.

They help serve at the weekly free meals once or twice a year.

Our troop has "adopted" our local forest preserve and do a cleanup two or three times per year.  We also are in the midst of a Christmas toy drive for a local children's organization.   Our boys also serve as "waiters" at the library's fund raising "Taste of......" and assist with a "Meet the Creek" day, giving and supervising canoe rides on the local creek.
