Low Start up cost Fundraiser

Recommended Posts

The Venturing Crew I work with needs to fundraise as it's account is low in funds.

At last weeks meeting they were discussing fundraising ideas but most required startup funds that the crew just doesn't have.

The youth really like to sell Gertrude Hawk chocolate bars but they don't have enough funds to cover what is needed to do this.

The only low cost idea they came up with is a Can and Bottle Drive. They have enough funds to get flyers to go door to door to pass out but are looking to do something else.

Anyone have any other little or no start up cost fundraising ideas I can suggest to the youth?

"Rent-a-Scout".    Handbills,  list of possible services:: leaf raking, brush clearing, car washing, house vacuuming, trash hauling (anyone have a pickup?) , ....

You might even consider more skilled jobs like fence painting (Tom Sawyer anyone?)   ,  also good for PR purposes, local TV, Newspapers, Facebook?    Mention your goal is a special trip, or charitable effort (hurricane relief?)

Check with the State Highway folks.  Set up a coffee and donut stand at a rest stop on the Interstate.  Be sure to include a prominent banner about your unit, etc.

Try a Rummage / Garage sale.  Virtually no expenses other than a few classified ads in the local paper and a few flyers in the neighborhood.  Members also love to clean out their attics, basements, etc.  All profit.

Clothing drives, my troop made $345+ on it. Contact a company and they usually give .22-.30/pound depends on where you live.

We advertised only on social media, Craigslist, and online event websites. We spent $0 in advertising.

Great way to get easy funds, but also helps a good cause.

A food competition featuring local restaurants who donate their food for the chance to win a trophies (and bragging rights)  - Think of a common food that each might have.  some examples

Chili

Hot wings

pizza

donuts

Find a place to hold it, and date.

Limit it to only one food item and determine a small size for the public to sample.

Publicize with flyers and any kind of free advertising you can get from radio stations, newspapers, etc

Have a way for public to vote for their favorate

Public pays at the door for admission

Of course there is more to planing this kind of event but we find it to be low cost high return

That would be a "expensive" fundraiser.

Who's paying for the plates, utensils, drinks (assuming local places won't donate drinks), etc.

I think that'll be better for when they have a decent amount of money.

https://www.countrymeats.com has good Scout programs.  Our most successful fundraisers have been Wreaths Across America, and buying a few hundred dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and selling them at local storefronts or parks during Saturday sporting events.  KK will sell them to you for something like $3 a box, with extra free boxes based quantity purchased.  We stopped doing the donut sales though as it seemed like people are becoming donut averse.  Our next effort is to sell spirit cups - http://www.spiritcupsfundraising.com/fundraising-products/spiritcups/

If you can get a venue for free, a quiz night has almost zero cost. Okay, if you have food with it, might cost a bit, but then, if tickets are bought in advance, you know how many you're catering for. Takes a bit of time to organise but...

Check with your local auto-part stores.  I am a store manager at Autozone, and we will allow any organization do a fundraiser car-wash, and provide everything needed.  You just need to make your signs and have people show up.

Also, our unit does concessions at a local RV seller's annual open house sale.  They know they have to feed their potential customers, so we do the sales and keep the money, they pay for the food and equipment.

We do a pancake breakfast as well, a local funeral home donates the cost of food as well.

Both of those require startup up money, but are 100% reimbursed, maybe do a small one to build up seed money to afford the bigger ones.

Woah woah woah! Is this a corporate thing or is it whatever the store manager wants to do? I would jump right on this opportunity!
