Appalachian Trail

Recommended Posts

Matthew Warrick, an Eagle Scout and his sister Kate, a Venture Scout, are currently hiking the Appalachian Trail. Shortly Kate will leave the Trail to start her summer job as a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch. Matthew plans to thru hike all 2,200 miles. They have created a website and post daily blogs, which I have been having tremendous fun following their adventures.

So, are you Dad? Brother? Uncle?

A lovely blog, but you're missing out on the old-school fun of getting post-cards every couple days from the re-supply stops!

I took a glance, will read more later

I have been reading http://www.trailjournals.com/ lately

basically a similar type of daily posting format...except yours is much nicer in terms of formatting and photos.

I've also been watching some video blogs on you tube as well....

I'l plan on following them and cheering them on!!!

I am Matthew and Kate's father who is vicariously living through their expedition.  I had worked at Philmont for 5 summers while in college and now enjoy high adventure treks each summer with the Scouts, but nothing to this extent.

I'll be heading south on the AT after the 4th of July week for 2 weeks, starting in Southern VA at the Washington/Jefferson Forest section.  Perhaps I'll see Matthew heading north!  Anyway, it's definitely the experience of a lifetime.

Is anyone aware of a (ideally) scout sponsored patch/award for backpacking/hiking the trail and/or for completing various state segments of the trail?

BSA-sponsored? No. Some local councils along the trail sponsor segment patches.

But the ATC has a site where you can get various segment patches.
