Iconic MayDay Scout image

Recommended Posts

Maybe to political for BSA, but I think this is what B-P meant by "peace scouts", http://i.imgur.com/9UKDt6W.jpg

I couldn't scale the image so you'll just have to click through... a female scout in a tan uniform and necker standing up to Czech Nazis trying to march through a Roma neighborhood. It brought a tear to my eye and I thought y'all might appreciate it too. I would be proud to have her as a patrol leader in out troop.

facism 1. (sometimes initial capital letter) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc.,

I invite you to wear a Republican elephant tee shirt and step on many college campuses, especially in California. You will be verbally and physically assaulted, threatened and even racially abused.

I think it's safe to say a gay pride parade is political no matter where you live around the pond

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, it is too political for BSA.  If a scout may join a protest (in uniform) against a political group, than another scout must be allowed to march with them.

It's an extraordinary image and one that I hope ends up in the public consciousness.

With regards to the political side things are a bit different in European countries that were historically occupied by the Nazis and/or fell within the former Soviet Bloc. Scouts in those countries tend to be a lot more politically motivated. That's not to say they are ever party political, more that they are more inclined to get involved in standing up to meat heads like this lot.

Quick historical fact.... scouts were heavily involved in the resistance in countries occupied by the Nazis. It was actually Dutch scouts that cut the cables to prevent the blowing up of the Nijmegan bridge during operation Market Garden

The Czech Interior Ministry says that police are taking steps to ensure the security of a Girl Scout after a photo showing her confronting a neo-Nazi group went viral.

The ministry's Center Against Terrorism and Hybrid Threats says the move was prompted by threats against the 16-year-old student, which included lynching, that appeared on Facebook.

The teenager was among about 300 protesters who confronted a rally of the far-right Workers Party of Social Justice on May Day in the country's second-largest city of Brno.

At one point, she was  photographed  facing up to one of about 150 supporters of the fringe party.

Pavla Velickinova, a spokeswoman for the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C., told NBC News Sunday, "The most important thing really is that the police took [the threats] seriously from the very first moment," He also said the girl was worried by the threats of violence and appreciated the move taken by police.

The scout organization, Junák Äeský skaut, said it did not have any details on the threats, but pointed to Czech media reports that a Facebook page was allegedly created titled "I support public lynching of the Girl Scout ..."

Lukas Neuheisl, a spokesperson for the organization, said the group received a Facebook message physically threatening all of their scouts after the her confrontation photo went viral.

"Information about her such as the school she attends and her Scout Troop, are public," Neuheisl said. "So I think these concerns [about her safety] are legitimate."

Much to discuss with scouts here,

This is the Brave New World we now live in.  As I have said since I was in high school, "It's only a matter of time before it comes to America."  Why would we be exempt from such things here?

Sigh.

Much as night follows day the extremists (of any description) threaten violence when they don't get their way.

It's so sad. This girl's story has been a big story this side of the pond. The amount of coverage, while modest in absolute terms, has been extraordinary given that it's been head to head with UK local elections and forthcoming national elections and the French presidential elections. I showed the original photo to my scouts on Thursday and the older ones were properly impressed (the younger ones didn't really understand)

I just hope that the online threats are just keyboard warriors.

... That terrfies me.

You want terrified? Talk to a refugee kid from someplace where nobody stood up to holligans. :(

God help the Czechs. They've been here before.

The plight of refugees is in no way minimized by the fact a bunch of adults are threatening a teenager with death for the grand crime of disagreeing with them.

There is nothing remotely "far-right" about "Workers Party of Social Justice".

I hope her, her family and her troop all remain safe, she's a brave soul.

Names of partys and countries don't always reveal their ideologies. Much of the Communist countries were "Democratic Peoples Republics" despite being neither democratic or republics. The Nazis were the National Socialist German Workers Party which sounds Socialist in name but was a fascist government.

Don't feel too bad for others because it's on our doorstep too.
