Robert Gates finished 2 year term; leaves BSA presidency

Recommended Posts

There is much speculation he will be on the short lists for VP. The question is which one?

Robert Gates has publicly stated his criticisms of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Krampus, do you know whether the numbers either previously or in 2015 reflect multiply registered individuals?  My own observation is that almost every male registered as a Venturer is also registered with a troop, either as a scout or as an under 21 scouter.

@@Krampus, The 2015 annual report info-graphic (a.k.a. screen real estate hog) on http://scoutingwire.org/annual-report/ actually has the number of venturers: 142,892.

So, there's room for confusion.

@@Krampus, what's your source for the 2014 numbers? Here's part of a reply to my posting of your figures on Bryan's blog.

... From the “Reports to the Nationâ€, available here: http://www.scouting.org/About/AnnualReports.aspx, which include headcount by program, I pulled the following:
                 2015      2014      2013      2012
Cub Scouts  1,261,340 1,295,527 1,417,034 1,528,673
B.S/Varsity   840,654   854,692   888,947   910,668
Venture/SeaS  142,892   157,655   192,080    219453
                 ————      ————      ————      ————
Total Trad. 2,244,886 2,307,874 2,498,061 2,658,794
Change from
Prior Year      -2.73%    -7.61%   -6.05%    -2.39%

...

To be fair, I followed that link and, in the 2014 annual report, cant find these numbers either! (Only round numbers are presented  )

The 2014 numbers came from the published annual report.

The 2015 numbers came from someone involved in the collection of the numbers before they were submitted to the group responsible for putting together the annual report which will be released shortly.

The 2015 numbers you have represent memberships reported before duplication are eliminated. Odd that they elected to report such numbers this year and never in years before.

I'm still hoping for a Bear Grills type to take the job.... we need somebody hanging on the side of a helicopter, or doing other really cool stuff to grab their attention (and fixing it so the scouts can do some of that cool stuff too....)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not they biggest Bear fan out there.... but you've gotta admit it looks like fun on tv

I am right there with you!  Love seeing Bear in his Chief Scout Uniform.  And I am a huge Bear Fan

Worth remembering that the Chief Scout position Bear occupies is a figure head one. He acts mostly as a chief ambassador for TSA and has more or less no input into any decision making process. The equivalent position to Robert Gates is split between the UK Chief Commissioner (Wayne Bullpit) which is a uniformed volunteer role and The Chief Exec (Matt Hyde) which is a full time paid non uniformed role. It is the two of them who do the most to run the organisation. Bear's job is to look good in front of the cameras!

Got a link? 'cause somehow, peoples' wires are crossed when it comes to this data.

The original discussion was lead by Bad Wolf a while back. I searched and got the links used but don't have time to find it right now. It is in this forum somewhere. ;)

He did a pretty good analysis back then.
