howarthe 42
My son crosses over to Boy Scouting next month. The first merit badge he wants to try for is Chess. The first requirement is about the history of chess. I want to buy him a book, but the titles that pop up on Amazon don't look like they would be appropriate for an 11-year-old. Any suggestions? CalicoPenn 729
There are some that say there are more books about chess than about any other game or spor (though I have to think that fishing has to be a viable contender, as would hunting). I don't know of any good books on chess history for youth - though your local library might have something. My suggestion would be the Chess Merit Badge Book - chances are pretty good that it will discuss everything needed to meet the requirements.

Just search BSA 334 Chess Merit Badge on Google. My suggestion would be the Chess Merit Badge Book - chances are pretty good that it will discuss everything needed to meet the requirements. The MB book is not that good on the history part.
qwazse 4344
Congratulations to your son! And props for his forward-thinking! His SM will be impressed when he asks for a blue card at his first conference. As these things go, he will general enjoy his time more if there is another scout who learns the badge with him. Stosh 3452
6 months ago I would have thought that chess would be the last choice most boys would pick for a MB. But at our cabin outing last month the boys sat around and played chess whenever they were not sledding. Seems to be as popular today as it was back when I was a kid 50 years go. SSScout 1615
Check with your local used book seller. Also check Second Story Books, local to me, nice folks: http://www.secondstorybooks.com/ search "chess" and "chess history", many titles.
