If your unit is chartered by a Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod parish, life has just gotten more interesting.   http://blogs.lcms.org/2015/lcms-statement-on-boy-scouts-of-america-policy-change

I have worked extensively with church youth groups for 40 years and Scouting 30+ years.  The church groups tend to really shy away from the outdoors types of activities and focus more on ministry acti

Not as big as the Judean Peoples Front!  [hey, where's my rim-shot emoticon???]

And exactly how big is the LCMS, as compared to the ELCA, in the number of chartered units?  The BSA groups them (and the Wisconsin Synod) all under "Lutheran".

I find the LCMS to be an odd duck to start with.  They are the group that reprimanded a pastor for participating in an interfaith vigil after the Sandy Hook Massacre.

  • In 2010, there were:
    • 70,349Cub Scouts in 1,778 packs
    • 47,109 Boy Scouts in 1,823 troops
    • 3,638 Venturers in 429 crews

You'll have a hard time finding a Wisconsin Synod charter partner.  Referring to the LCMS as an 'odd duck' is a bit below Scouting standards.

Wisconsin Synod has it's own scout program (Pioneers) just like the Catholics (Scouts of St. George) , Assembly of God (Royal Rangers), general conservative protestant (Trail Life USA), etc.

The pie will continue to split as time goes on.

For clarification, these are the numbers for all 7 Lutheran Synods, not just the Missouri Synod.

I'm curious.  Can you list them?  Thanks

Sure, but to be more accurate, these are the top seven in order of size

ELCA - Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

LCMS - Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (about half the size of ELCA)

WELS - Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (about 5 time smaller than LCMS)

LCMC - Lutheran Congregation in Mission for Christ

AFLC - Association of Free Lutheran Congregations

ELS - Evangelical Lutheran Synod (not related to ELCA)

CLBA - Curch of the Lutheran Brethren of America

There are some smaller Lutheran groups, like the American Association of Lutheran Churches and the North American Lutheran Church, and many lutheran congregations that are tied directly into other countries churches (you can still find Church of Norway and Church of Sweden Lutheran congregations in the US).

Interestingly, ELCA has statewide or local dioceses that they call synods

*** I was looking for Lutheran Church sizes based upon number of chartered units.
