Tree house count as a camping night ?

Recommended Posts

Honestly, I don't see this as an issue. We're going to provide opportunities for 24 "camping nights" this Scout Year, not including NYLT or High Adventure. Half of these (12 nights) will be in tents. While every Troop has Scouts who would rather sleep in a Lodge or cabin than a tent, you have to be a real avoider personality to not have 20 nights that qualify for the Camping Merit Badge by the time you're 13 in our Troop.

I waffle on this but it seems the intent of the Camping MB is tent or under stars. So even a cave wouldn't count. OA seems a little more relaxed in the requirements so I guess a cabin would count. I know when the PLC requested this they were just looking for something fun and different to do. They still had to cook outside, haul their gear 1/4 mile and suffer a 28F night outside. That's what it's supposed to be about I think. Anyway, I asked our DAC and he said they count for camping MB and OA so not some hill I want to die on.

Q, maybe we should hook up the boys to biometrics every night to make sure they actually fell asleep. :) You no sleep, no points for you! Speaking of cope I took the instructor training two weeks ago and it about killed me. Had a couple of venturers in my patrol and this one female said this was the first time she has done high ropes without a blindfold. She said she has done it 4 times starting at 14. I was speechless.

I had a similar discussion with non-scouters about what defines camping. This was while we backpacked a 30 mile loop. So we had quite a bit of time to discuss the concept. We discussed gear, sleeping, cooking, distance, activities, etc... We attempted to determine at what point did something become "camping". It became apparent that one item did not define something as camping, nor did the absence of it eliminate camping as the label. In the end, it we decided it was like Justice Stewart said about pornography, "I shall not today attempt further to define... I know it when I see it".

Well If your Gonna Fine tooth the Rules...I would say that A Scout who sleeps under a Tarp Can not Count those nights either since he is not Sleeping under the Stars and the Tarp is Not a Tent.... just saying

Look at The New Swamp Base...Several places they sleep under Lean To's and at Some point sleep on a House Boat...I would say they are still camping.

I love combs

"TENT: a portable shelter of skins, canvas, plastic, or the like, supported by one or more poles or a frame and often secured by ropes fastened to pegs in the ground.

something that resembles a tent."

So, for present purposes, a tarp is a "tent."

I have a BSA tarp labeled "TARP TENT."

At least we are all in the "neighborhood." "Journey to Excellence" [sic] specifically counts an indoor "lockin" to play electronic games as a "weekend campout."

This weekend I'll be at a council camporee located at a county fairgrounds underneath floodlights and next to two busy streets. While I will be in a tent' date=' I don't really consider it camping. [/quote'] Just go around all weekend and refer to it an oree.
