It would have taken longer to break all the links or make all the reservations services "unavailable" for all the things you can get a permit for online-- than it took to just take the site offline and plug in a redirect to the dept of the interior.
I see your point on the reservation services, especially if this goes long term.

Can you give me insight into the logic of having 7 personnel to guard the barricades they set up to close the monuments in DC that usually have 5 police doing nothing?

I bet if we offered to sell all the mineral rights for the National Parks the shutdown would be over in about 90 seconds.

National Forest offices are closed but the trails are still available. Put away the tent shelters, dutch ovens, and Winnebagos. Pick up a backpack and do some real outdoor adventure. As for the closed parks, nice - the wildlife can use a 'breather'.
All what NeverAnEagle said in short: Leave no trace. If there is no evidence ... ;-)

Over-reach theatre:

In some cases, efforts to shut down these sites actually require more manpower and resources than if they had been left open, highlighting the fact that this is an act of partisan theater by the Obama administration to pin the blame for the government shutdown on Republicans and opponents of Obamacare.

When one visits Gettysburg, they couldn't find a park employee to save one's life, but now that it is closed, they are all over the place enforcing the barricades. This is only a political ploy that common sense Americans can see right through.

All the state parks in Wisconsin are open and no government in the way of having a great time. They are really gorgeous this time of year, too.

The feds also told Wisconsin to shut down some jointly managed federal properties, and the state proceeded to tell the feds where they could put that idea.

Unfortunately I'm guessing that the vast expanse of the Nicolet and Chequamegon forests are closed to camping, although not all of the parks have gates...

Add to that the fact that many monuments and other open-air spaces are "closed" for the first time ever as a result of a government shutdown. Clearly there is a deliberate effort to inflict the maximum pain....

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and National War Memorial in Ottawa are open to the public. It is located across the street to Parliament Hill right downtown and there are no fences, no ticket booths, no security. All one has to do is cross the street, sit down on one of the many benches and remember. If they ever shut down their government, no one at the memorial would even notice.

Heard one of my state's Representatives on the radio this morning saying that he often goes to the Jefferson Memorial at night to do his reading. He says they have 3 staff people at most on site. They had 7 guards turning people away. Figure that one out. It's Obama's punitive political theatre. It's like a little kid with a scratch flailing on the floor and wailing that his arm is cut off.

Or one could take the opinion that we need increased security because times like these fire up the wing nuts and they start doing really stupid things.
True, Right Wing Nuts can be provoked by Left Wing Nuts. The rhetorical vitriol just fuels the insanity.

OOPS! Wrong forum. I should have realized that the discussion in here was being too logical.

Like the WWII vets in DC were all that worried about the extra guards at the WWII Memorial? Once more people stand up to the bullies, they will back down, they always do. With more and more people into Conceal Carry, it could get ugly really fast. If one person walks through a barricade, they will start something. If 50 walk through a barricade, they'll stand there, smile and say, "Have a nice day." The WWII vets went up against hundreds of thousands Germans and Japanese. A lone guard at the barricade at the Memorial? Yeah, right, that's going to stop them. :)

Government efficiency. Let's spend 2-3x the funds to keep people OUT. Makes a lot of sense.
