Outdoor Cooking Presentation

Recommended Posts

I am going to be doing a presentation on outdoor cooking for a local Junior Girl Scout Camporee in November. The presentation will be geared towards the girls and their leaders. The primary goal it to show them that outdoor cooking can be fun and easy - not something to be afraid of. We want to get them away from the Pop Tart breakfasts and the hot dog suppers! Can anyone give me any ideas of what would be fun and informative to include? Thanks.

Pop Tarts for breakfast??? I have never had Pop Tarts for breakfast on a camping trip. Do you eat them raw (so to speak)? Kinda gross. The only time I ever ate a hot dog on a campout was with the Cub Pack!

Will you be doing your presentation over a campfire or on a Coleman stove?

How long will your presentation be? Will it be just a one time presentation or ongoing as a part of rotating stations?

How involved do you want to get? Do you want to do some quick & easy, some long & involved, or some of both?

Are you going to have some type of theme (foil packet, dutch oven, cardboard box baking, pie iron, etc)?

Will they be making & eating or just watching?

How many attendees do you expect? This could affect what you have due to the cost of the items needed.

All of these questions will impact what you choose to do.

Here are a couple of good resources:

If you have limited time & want a diverse menu Pie Irons are fun, easy & versatile. You can make breakfast, lunch, dinner & dessert.

We just had our Webelos den camping last weekend. Foil packs are the best/easiest way to cook on a campfire. You don't need to buy a dutch oven or any other specialty cooking items. Cut up potatoes, carrots, celery and onions and some type of meat. Have each girl put the items she wants in a foil pack, add a Tablespoon (+/-) of water in the pack and wrap it up tight. Put the pack right on the coals. Cook for about 15 minutes or until meat is cooked through. Seasonings can be added before or after cooking. (I prefer before)

OK, My girls don't eat Pop Tarts or hotdogs. Yes, they eat them cold - very gross. We make yummy dutch oven meals. I cook anything and everything in my Dutch Ovens which is why they asked me to do this class. I will be at a station where groups will rotate through every 30-45 minutes. I am actually looking for some fun and simple things that will catch the attention of other leaders and girls. The Girl Scout camp usage in our area is very, very low partly because the leaders are uncomfortable "camping" and cooking out. I don't want to over whelm them with Dutch oven cooking since most of them don't have dutch ovens although that will be my focus, because it is my favorite. I like the idea of a box oven although I have never used one. I have never used a pie iron either. I'll also use a Coleman stove and possibly my whisperlite to demo some backpacking type meals. I also have a little Swedish Army mess kit with an alcohol stove that my children love to cook on. Also, I'd like to demonstrate some solar cooking, or at least present it as an option. That is the sort of thing that I am looking for ideas for. Basically, I'm looking for fun easy ideas. Thanks!
