Push Ups

Recommended Posts

The Troop my two sons have joined gives the boys push ups if they are late for meetings or if they do not show up in full uniform. What are you thoughts on this?

Three immediate thoughts - 1) too militaristic, 2) hazing when it comes to the scouts who, for whatever reason, can't do pushups (OK, it seems to me it's hazing even for the scout who CAN do pushups) and 3) just generally a bad idea to single out scouts just for being late for a meeting or not being in full uniform when there's all kinds of good reasons why it might have happened (although I do think there's fewer excuses for not being in full uniform than there might be for being late). We really do want to encourage them to make it to meetings, don't we?

While agreeing with Vicki, I'll take a more simplistic stance.

It's just moronic.

What you're teaching the Scout is that if you're going to be late, it's better not to come at all.

I agree with your statement. I don't see it teaching anything. If a Scout doesn't show up in uniform then it should be reflected in a SM Conference or at the Board of Review under Scout Spirit. We have had Scouts quite because of this. The other aspect is that it is the Senior Scouts who hand out the pushups. What are they learning about leadership by telling someone they have to perform pushups?
