Work done while a Venture/Boy Scout may be applied to each program. For example, the backpacking merit badge requires three 15 mile 2 night treks and the backpacking elective also requires 3 15 miles 2 night treks. But just because you earn the Backpacking mert badge doesnt mean you completed the the Backpacking elective for the bronze, then again you wouldnt need 6 trips either.

hey OGE, please clarify this for me as well?

A Boy Scout who has joined a crew may continue to be registered in his troop, right? In fact, he must be registered in a troop in order to advance towards Eagle, also right? (or not?)

So if lots of fellows are registered in two units simultaneously, how does a district or council count the total number of youth? They can't just add cubs+scouts+venturers...

A scout may join a Venture Crew and be members of both a troop and a Crew. if the scout joins the Crew while a first class scout, he may continue earning the ranks of Star, Life and Eagle in either Troop or Crew. A Crew member may become Eagle without being registered in a Troop if he joins the Crew as a First Class Scout

As far as counting numbers, in the council where i live, dual registered youth are only counted once. A new Crew of 12 Boy Scouts does not increase the numbers of the COuncil, adding young ladies or males who are not scouts will increase the numbers

Allow me to clarify something. I a boy is jointly registered as a Boy Scout and a Venturer, he can "double dip". That is, if he participates in an event he can get credit in both programs.

Anything he has done prior to being registered as a Venturer does not count. The only exception to this is a certification such as First Aid or CPR.

If he joins a Crew and drops out of the Troop prior to attaining First Class, he cannot continue Boy Scout advancement. If he is a First Class or higher he may continue advancement.

This very topic was thoroughly discussed at Philmont this past year.

This is something our crew and troop have researched very carefully. The Venture book states any requirements done as a boy scout (and implies any registered youth group, girl scouts, etc.) can double for the Venture requirement as long as the requirements match and as long as the youth is registered as a Venture.

As already stated in this form, previously earned cerifications, As Long As The Certification is Current when the Award requiring the Certification is awarded, applies even if the cerification took place prior to registering as a Venture.

This is why our Troop encourages interested youth to co-register the buddy Venturing Crew (same council number, same charter) as soon as they are eligible. High adventure and other activities like COPE get credit with both programs. However the youth are counciled that earning the equivalant merit badge will not complete the same Venture item; Ventures have harder requirements! We also require the youth to focus on Eagle.

At this point we have youth getting Eagle who have a good start on Venturing requirements!
