Sections, taking it to the next level

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here been invovled working with a section as an officer, I plan on running for Vice Section Chief at conclave next week and other than the stories from the past section chief, who is a member of my lodge, I was wondering if anyone had any stories or things about experience to share.

I just ran for my sections Vice Chief this past weekend. I lost because rules were broken. That's my first piece of advice, don't let them break any rules. Second, find problems with your section and tell them how you're going to fix them. Talk about the high adventure bases and the Section Assitance Team and what your going to do with them since those are part of your job. The rules and job descriptions are in the field operations guide.

I served on the Council of Chiefs for 2 years and as the Section Training Coordinator for one. The biggest piece of advice for you is to have your lodge on your side and use them to help you. Section office is very political. You have to play the game. Good luck.

I must say most of what is required to make a section work properly is contained in the various publications and program materials from the national level of the OA. Anyone going for a section office should read through the Field Operations Guide (FOG) and should probably try to attend a CoC (Council of Chiefs) meeting or two to find out how the section works.

Most of the problems in the Scouting program come from our innability to make the vision set out in the many publications a reality. There is no need to invent the wheel, someone else already did that and wrote a book about it.

I got elected!, my lodge chief pulled some strings, and a lot of the people at Conclave knew who I was from being a counselor at summer camp. I ran under the platform of improving communication and improving lodges by building off of other lodges successess. I'm really excited, plus I get a jacket with my name embroidered on it!
