Basementdweller - use the experience as a "teachable moment" for the boys.

For example, my family moved to St. Louis in 1968 and the day after we moved into our house some "nice" neighbors came by with some welcoming food and stated they were so happy to have us move in to the neighborhood because a black family was looking at the house too. Well, my parents said thank you but later talked to us (my older brother and I who were 13 and 12 about the situation.

So acco......

The boys saw a couple of average middle age folks that were glad to see them and supported them....the boys returned to selling popcorn while they chatted with the leaders at the point of sale. the boys were not party to the discussion.

What is the teachable moment????

Mr. B what is a homosexual???

Mr. B I think I understand what it is, is it okay?????

Mr. B why do those people think is is wrong?????

Mr. B if the bible says its wrong, and it is ok then is the bible wrong????

Mr. B if the bible is wrong does that mean god is wrong????

Mr. B what do you thing about it?????

Mr. B I think I am a Homosexual.....

Phone rings several hours later with frantic mom....

WHAT DID YOU TEACH MY SON THIS AFTERNOON????

ahh, no thanks....

I will let my 11-13 year olds figure out what homosexuality is on their own or with a discussion with their parents.....

I am fairly certain my boys are well versed in the world and I sure if asked they would have the beginnings of an opinion.

Another point to my post.

Scouter.com is the only place where folks who are PUSHING the gay agenda can strike out at the BSA volunteers and bring the argument to them.

NONE of the other scouting forums or websites would tolerate such non sense.

So My point is that Scouter.com is the focal point of that attack and irregardless of what we read here it is not as widely accepted as many believe.

Sentiel as you get older and have children what you believe will change many times. I find myself becoming more conservative in my views as I age.

I'm not sure I see the "focal point of that attack". Sure, there's Merlyn. He's not a registered Scouter and he has an up front agenda. Other than that?

I've seen a number of active BSA volunteers state their position. I don't think Eamonn, or Lisabob, or NJCubScouter, or moosetracker, or BSA24, any of the other volunteers who say they are in favor of local option are "PUSHING the gay agenda" nor are they trying to "strike out at the BSA volunteers".

I think it's good that there's a forum where active volunteers can state opinions on the current policies. Now, if we were being overrun with non-volunteers, then maybe it would be different.

It might have been an oversight but you can include me as being in favor of local option as well.

Edit: I'm not sure about that 'gay agenda' thing either. Me, I'm mostly about 'fairness' as an agenda.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

Basement, I have no idea how my views will develop as I move on later in life. However, I try to keep an open mind and will hopefully arrive at just and moral positions.

Furthermore, I am also in favor of the local option, and I certainly don't feel like I'm part of the gay agenda, nor an attack on the BSA, and organization I admire and continue to volunteer for.

Well I got a good laugh, thanks. In the space of the last three or four days I've been called a bra-burning feminazi, a communist, a "GD SOCIALIST!, " a fat cat union boss who wants criminals and sex offenders to run public schools, a thug, a bleeding-heart, card-carrying, ACLU-loving liberal out to poison the minds of our young people, and a few other choice labels. Now apparently I push a gay agenda, on top of it all! I'm probably out to demolish marriage, too (you've been warned, people)! You all had better watch out because single-handedly, I am destroying society as we know it. Funny, how threatened people tend to get when you advocate in a level-headed and moderate tone for basic fairness and equal rights.

Anyway, basement, the conclusions you are drawing from the lack of discussion on other websites is apparently flawed. Honestly, I don't have time to participate in more than one scouter forum so I will take you at your word that other scouter sites don't allow this sort of open discussion of the "gay issue." If that's the case, then you can hardly cite the lack of such discussion elsewhere as proof that the people on those other forums are all of one mind - in fact, you can't know if they support the current policy or not, if they're not allowed to post dissenting views on those other sites.

Just so we can get it out of the way, I'll stipulate now that I'm probably also a terrible parent who has ruined her child's life, I'm a hater of PTA meetings, I failed to show sufficient school spirit at homecoming events in high school, and I'm most likely mean to kittens and puppies, too. As, of course, are all of us who are "pushing a gay agenda" here at scouter.com ;)

Yes Barry, all puppies. I give no quarter, no matter how disgustingly cute a puppy face. In fact I am partial to puppy-fur coats....

Well pack, you've got me beat there. The only way I could have voted for (or against) Nixon would have been through some serious voter fraud, since I was still in diapers when he resigned.

Not to blur the lines between threads too much, but you've now expressed remorse for your choices of both Nixon and GW. Been hoodwinked a couple of times, there, eh. Maybe in future you should vote against your own better judgment? I do believe that means you ought to abandon Romney and vote for Obama, this time around. (Or at least, Johnson or Stein.)

Hey Pack: On the thread "Families Dropping Out..." way back, when the thread was first running you mentioned you were going to email all the members of your CO about BSA'a membership policies. Did you get any feedback on that? I tried pinging you on that thread but I don't think you replied. Just curious.

packsaddle, it was indeed just an oversight. Even as I was listing a few people off the top of my head, I knew that there were others I should be including.

One of the others would be that Basementdweller fellow who is pushing his gay agenda... "I don't agree with BSA's ban on Gay or Lesbian Leaders.....I know some folks in the Gay/Lesbian lifestyle that are much better people than some of the Bible thumping Heterosexual folks I have met in scouting... Just sayin..... " (3/29/12)

Lisa, just to clarify, I didn't choose GW...but I believed him once he was elected - big mistake...that's the nature of getting hoodwinked in that case. I should have been more suspicious after his campaign's shameful actions in SC during the primaries. But hoodwinked I was. I'm guilty of that.

You know, I'm thinking back to someone I also liked back then: Shirley Chisolm. She had incredible spirit and a direct manner I liked a lot. I almost voted for her.
