Kahuna, I'm a little confused, since I haven't been following this story (and never, ever listen to Rush, although I have read some "interesting" transcripts), but when I went to the link you posted, there were two pictures there, one of a person holding a sign with a swastika, and another of a person with an pair of SS symbols on it. Were these not the photos that Pelosi was referencing?

I have no love for Pelosi, but I have also read reports of swastikas and nazi imagery showing up at health care town meetings.

DanKroh,

The swastika is clearly in a circle with a slash through it, meaning essentially, "no fascism." I assume the SS runes have the same connotation, although they aren't in a circle like that (and the slogan can't be read in the photo). I think the implication is clear that they represent what the demonstrators think of public health care.

Pelosi's assertion was just the opposite: that the demonstrators were skinheads, or fascists. It just isn't so.

Pelosi said "They're carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on health care." I'd say Pelosi is pointing out that some of the people at these town meetings are playing the fascist card, not that she's saying some of these people are actual fascists. It's pretty easy to find wingnuts comparing Obama to Hitler and babbling about "socialism."

Kahuna, do you have a link to the text where she made that implication? I haven't been able to find it.

I watched the video of her comments, which were:

"I think they're Astroturf... You be the judge. "They're carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare."

Given that I have seen a lot of accusations of socialism and fascism tied to Obama, and a lot of Hitler/Nazi imagery associated with Obama by right-wing extremists, I assume she meant that she thought it was inappropriate for them to be making those associations at that place and time. Sorry, but I just don't get that she was calling the demonstrators Nazis or skinheads.

Unless there was more to her statement than was was on the video I saw, which I quoted above.

On the other hand, I have now read transcripts (from his own website) where Rush pretty directly compared Democrats (and liberals) to Nazis, and Obama to Hitler.

Dan,

Let me guess - you totally missed where Democtrat Rep. Brian Baird compared the protesters to the Brown Shirts.

"Baird said he's using the new system because he fears his political opponents may be planning "an ambush" to disrupt his meetings, using methods Baird compared to Nazism.

"What we're seeing right now is close to Brown Shirt tactics," Baird, D-Vancouver, said in a phone interview. "I mean that very seriously."

Brent, actually, yes I did miss it.

Is there some reason I shouldn't have? Or is there some reason that I deserved your special shout out? Before this thread started, I had somehow happily missed this entire issue. I haven't entirely plugged back into the world since returning from summer camp.

However, from reports I've seen while catching up on news today, it does appear that being disruptive and shouting down speakers definitely is the new fad at town meetings.

Personally, though, I'd just characterize such behavior as extremely rude.

Where was Nancy Pelosi when the far left was referring to "Bu **** ler?"

I think dragging swastikas into the debate has created a great distraction. I also think that Limbaugh often does more harm to his causes than good. Having said all that, the passion that this health care nationalization effort has aroused is spontaneous and is based on real legitimate concerns. It is far too easy for the liberal politicians to dismiss protestors as fanatics. The mid term election in 2010 could get very interesting.

In a Country like America, I can say that I would nto be surprised if Swastika wearing, skinhead types came to a Town Hall meeting on healtch Care reform. They probably come to every Town hall meeting wearing Swastikas, it what they do. They don't define all those who oppose the current legislation. I am sure there are plenty of old time Hippies at these Town Hall meetings as well, brains addled by long term substance abuse and they don't define the people who hold the same values they do, for or against the proposed legislation.

How many here have actually downloaded and read the 1000+ page bill that describes in detail what we're arguing about? Hmmm. Thought so. I have. And being in and around the health care and regulatory field all my life, I actually understand most of it...and it scares the hell out of me. I immediately wrote my two Senators and Congressman.

Yes, I listen to talk radio...but I wanted to be fair and read it for myself before forming an opinion, because being a reasonably intelligent and educated person I realize that there's hype and "entertainment" that often obscure the facts.

It's HR 3200 if anyone's interested in reading it. Your legislator's not.
