Cooking Themed Games

Recommended Posts

Help - My son asked me to see if any of you have any ideas for a game for his next troop meeting. It needs to be something related to cooking - the boys are working on their cooking merit badge.

He's in charge of the game and is stumped on what to do.

TIA

Welcome to the campfire.

Couple of ideas come to mind. One would be have a fire building game. Maybe limited to one match, or no matches but using alternate fire starting methods (sparkers, steel wool and 9 volt battery, magnifying glass, etc.) Another would be a demonstation of these methods including the making of char cloth (use a metal altoid box or similar with a 1/8 inch hole the top, and 2 by 2 inch pieces of denim. Heat box on stove or coals until the box stops smoking)

Possibly a game in which each patrol has to lash up cooking utensils and stands. Best one wins.

Utensilless cooking is always good, but may take up more time than you have available.

But stay away from easy foods, open can and cook, hotdogs, etc.

Maybe just a planning session by each patrol to come up with rosters, menus, and recipes for the next overnight. Best planning gets award and the patrol that performs best on the overnight wins contest.

Just thoughts

Read the recipe for a meal and have the scouts guess the name of the dish.

Name a food and have them determine if you bake, fry, boil, steam, or eat the food raw.

Put a different spice or herb in each of 12 lunch bags. The scouts must use sight and smell only to identify the contents.

How many in a? How many pints in a quart? Quarts in a gallon, cups in a quart? ounces in a pound? doughnuts in a dozen? you get the idea?

Match food items to food groups.

The price is right. Show a food items and see which patrol gets closest to the actual cost.

Have them come over to my house and see who can do the dishes the fastest!

We have held cooking contests where the boys need to plan and cook a meal with a strict spending limit. The task may be cook a dinner for under $30 that feeds a patrol of eight. Each patrol goes off and plans, purchases and then cooks the meal (and cleans up). This takes at least two troop meetings. The judges can either be the SPL/ASPL or the SM/ASMs (taste tester). After the official taste test, everyone eats! The "finals" are usually held during the monthly outing.(This message has been edited by acco40)

We've had an activity (a bit of planning on your part if you bring the ingredients) in which we display a list of items (milk, bisquick, beef (or some type of meat) pie filling, onion, spuds, etc) and then have the Scouts determine a meal from the ingredients. It's interesting (and sometimes suprising) to see the different concotions the boys come up with (stew, pot pies, pizza, etc) . Or...provide those ingredients to all during a campout, if you want to see the whole "game" in action..
