What training is needed to be trained?

Recommended Posts

We are working on our district JTE, and in looking at our unit's rosters there are many "N" by leaders' names as to whether they are trained or not. However, their training history on myscouting.org seem to have all the required training. So why the "N" ??

So to be a SM ASM. CM. ACM. DL. ADL. CC. COR. What precisely is the required training to get a "Y" ??

YPT plus what else per the above positions??

The first thing you tell all the leaders you can get to listen is for them to go into their myscouting account and make sure their membership ID number is listed in their account and save the profile.

then wait a bit and try pulling up their training under their id number on my scouting training verification.

then check your report again and see if any N's turned into Y's.

Training required for all:

YPT

This is Scouting

and depending on who you talk to Fast start for their position

SM ASM also need

Scoutmaster Specific

Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills

Troop Committee of all kinds need the all above

and Troop Committee Challenge

CM and ACM also need

Cubmaster Specific training

Den Leaders also need their

Den (or tiger or webelos)Leader Specific

COR should also have Chartered Org Rep training.

there is a chart here for our council

http://www.grandcanyonbsa.org/OrgHeaders/62/Training%20Matrix%2006_08_12.pdf

but it doesn't list the This is Scouting or Fast Start at all.

There is a chart at National you need to be following to determine who is trained.

It different from the position.

AFAIK, Fast Start/This is Scouting is NO LONGER required to be considered trained.

By an large, its YPT (and note there are 2 different courses for adults: general and Venturing) and position specific training. SOME leaders will need additional training (IOLS for certain ones).

Recently the National Council made changes to what courses are required to be considered Trained. Neither Fast Start nor This is Scouting are now REQUIRED.

See:

http://scouting.org/filestore/training/pdf/BasicTrainingCourseRequirements.pdf

http://scouting.org/filestore/training/pdf/What_makes_a_trained_leader.pdf

However, ScoutNet may not have caught up with these changes, and may still be showing N next to names who have completed the correct courses. Your registrar MAY be able to manually reset the training status, but it would be a big job. A status of N may also show because someone's Youth Protection isn't up to date. They may have been O.K. at recharter (whenever that was done), but have lapsed since recharter occured. A Training Status report run after recharter, may result in someone showing as untrained.

With Cub Scout leaders the problem often is timing. A leader may recharter in March as a Cub Scout den leader, and begin serving as a Webelos den leader in June. S/he may have taken Webelos Leader Position Specific Training in May, but the charter still shows him as a DL, not a WL, so the Webelos training doesn't "count" because it doesn't match his current registered position.

JtE makes no mention of only current training being accepted, and while the national folks said it would only take the current training for the awards, they backed down on that when there was a very loud protest on the topic.

> position-specific training does not transfer!

> So if you had a trained Den Leader who switched

> registration to Cubmaster this year, he is no longer

> considered trained.

This is why the fancy position patches for being trained made sense. The trained badge is silly. You sew it on, you aren't going to remove it just because you change positions. People leave them on forever once they get them on. Often they are glued on and can't come off without major surgery.

The trained position patches were the ticket here. Shiny badges for trained leaders, regular badges for those who had not completed training. Forced you to downgrade your status until you attended training.

Emb is correct that is the list of courses that are required to wear the trained patch, but...

The scoutnet system still expects "This is Scouting" for it to mark people as trained.

Hopefully the disparate databases will someday be synchronized or consolidated.

"Another point, position-specific training does not transfer!"

well, yeah, that's the point of it being POSITION-SPECIFIC. It only applies TO THAT POSITION.

You change position, you need to take the training for that position.
