Popcorn Prize Option - Camp Bucks

Recommended Posts

Trying this for our sale this year. Tell me what you think:

$10 in "Camp Bucks" are awarded to any scout who meets their goal ($300 combined popcorn/Christmas wreath sales). An additional $10 in Camp Bucks are awarded for every additional $300 in sales.

Camp Bucks can be used for camping (day camps, resident camps, or family camp). They can accumulate year-to-year. They can be transferred to another Troop or Pack, or to a sibling.

Camp Bucks cannot be "cashed out" if you leave scouting, or used for registration, supplies, uniforms, or individual activity fees (tickets, etc).

WOuld the scout actually view it as a "prize" if his parents have to pay $10 less for camp fees? Perhaps if the bucks could be spent in the trading post...

This is a Pack prize, right? If so then it sounds similar to what we have done for the past couple years. We give back $20 when the scout reaches his sales goal, $40 if his sales are twice his goal, and so on. The money can be spent towards any Pack expense - so this means campouts, day camp, annual Pack dues. It can't be applied towards uniform or camping gear stuff (stuff outside of the Pack), it can't be carried over from one year to the next, and it can't be transferred outside of the Pack.

We did a parent survey the year before we started the program and the year after we started the program. It indicated that for our group it was a hit, with the parents at least. We had about 80% saying that they liked the program and wanted to continue it, with no votes opposing it. We even had 40% of respondents indicating that the incentive had at least "some" impact on them helping their scout reach his sales goal.

So from our perspective it benefits both the parent and the scout. The parent gets immediate reward for putting forth a solid effort in our fundraiser, which is voluntary. The scout is getting more opportunity to participate in Pack events.

Are these "Camp Bucks" from the district/council, or are they specific to your Pack?

If they are specific to your Pack how can you guarantee that all other Packs and Troops will honor them?

Will this be the only incentive offered?

I think the Scouts and their families would get more incentive if you shared more of the profits with them. After reaching a certain level, give them a percentage of the sales in a Scout account/Scout bucks that they can use toward camp or any other Scouting expense. For example, if the pack wants each Scout to sell $300 in popcorn, the pack keeps all the proceeds for sales up to $300, then the Scouts get half of the proceeds of all sales in excess of $300. This should really encourage Scouts and their families to work hard to earn their own way to camp.

...waiting for one of the Scout Lawyers to weigh in regarding non-profit fundraising going to benefit individuals directly...
