Cub Scout Shooting Sports Director

Does anyone have a copy of the Camp School book for Cubs? I can't find mine and was trying to remember the age of the SS Director -- I remember it us supposed to be 21, but I can't seem to find any documentation to back up my memory. I know ROs for Cubs can be 18, but I thought the area director had to be 21.

Jhankins - I am unsure how "official" this site is. But this "seems" like official rules. They list the age as 18.. Plus some training they must go through.

Yeah, 18 is the official rule for Range Officers, but SS Directors is the qualification I'm looking for.

From the 2002 Shooting Sports for CS book

 

The shooting sports director must be at least 21

years old and hold a current National Camping

School shooting sports directors card. National

Camping School qualifications include BB, rifle,

shotgun, muzzle-loading, and archery instruction,

unless otherwise noted on the card. He or she is

registered with the Boy Scouts of America.

Well, maybe I didn't have the right answer. But, I got the question raised back to the top of the list, where others had the answer for you..

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. Our resident camp director was insisting he didn't need a SS Director and there's only one camp school left to get one.

As others have noted, the RSOs must be 18 and over. My understanding is a Shooting Sports Director is for Overnight camps, with a full range of ranges. He/she oversees all the ranges, each overseen (?) by a RSO. Age not withstanding, LMTY, any Cub Scout Archery or BB or Slingshot range needs to have a steady, mature, responsible hand. No nonsense, make rules stick kindaguy. They can have fun, take pride in the bulls, but no one wants to send a Cub home with an arrow in their foot.

If it is simply a cub scout activity, 18 is the age of the RO. They first need to be trained though. This can be a training course by a SS Dir.

 

For scout/venture a person the is 21+ that is NCS or NRA certified needs to be on property not necessarily at the range.

 

I know if it's a council camp they usually like to have the SS Dir there even if it is just cub scouts, but they are not needed.

I finally got a hold of a copy of this year's standards:

 

The shooting sports director is at least 21 years of age and

holds a valid certificate of training from the Shooting Sports

section of National Camping School. (National Camping

School qualifications include rifle, shotgun, muzzleloading,

and archery instructor, unless otherwise noted on the card.)

The shooting sports director must be present in camp when

a firearm range is in use.

Standard range operating procedures are developed and

posted at all range locations.
