Cub Scout Summer camps

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm the mother and den leader of a very active Webelos I scout. He has gone to summer resident camp at our Council camp for 3 years (counting the one in a couple of weeks)now. He has become bored with only getting to camp for 3 days and 2 nights. This year we are staying for 2 sessions (back to back)in an effort to give him more of what he wants at camp.

Our local camp is very set in it's ways, not much variation from year to year. They are dead set against extending session lengths. "It's been this way for years and it's always worked." The only problem is it's not working. Cubs numbers are dropping. I serve on the camping committee and have tried to change things, but I'm beating my head against a brick wall.

He has been to a local YMCA camp for a week and to the PTC day camp at Philmont. He has also done day camp in our District for 4 years. His statement to me this year when we registered fo camp was "why does my sister the Girl Scout get to go to camp for a week and I only get 3 days?"

Does anyone have suggestions of longer Cub camps in their Councils we can look at for next year? We're in SE Michigan. I don't have a problem driving for 6-10 hours to get to somewhere my son will enjoy. We drive almost 2 to our Council camp as it is now. Other Councils in our area also use the 2-3 days of camp model too.

Thanks for the help!

Chicago Area Council (Owasippe Scout Reservation is actually in W. Michigan) offers a 5 day Webelos resident camp, see flyer here:

http://chicagobsa.doubleknot.com/openrosters/DocDownload.asp?id=49156

Upon looking around I also found several 4 day/3 night webelos resident camps within driving distance. I know 4 days isn't that much better than 3, but maybe a change of location would make it more exciting too:

Black Swamp Area Council in NW OH . Registration form here (Webelos resident camp is on 2nd page): http://www.bsac449-bsa.org/assets/pdfs/Forms/Smoke-Signals-ad-Cub-Camp-forms-2009.pdf

Heart of Ohio Council , flyer is here:

Great Trails Council (Cleveland/Akron OH area), flyer here:

In Michigan:

Lake Huron Area Council, flyer here: http://old.lhacbsa.org/Forms/CS%20Resident%20Camp%202009.pdf

Clinton Valley Council (Oakland & Macomb counties), flyer here: http://www.cvc-bsa.org/camping/cubCamp/residentCamp.html

Detroit Area Council, flyer here:

Gerald R. Ford Council (Western MI), flyer here:

This isn't an exhaustive search by any means, just some councils I was familiar with already. Good luck with your search!

That's fantastic that your son is so into camping and Scouting. Great for him!

It's at the farthest edge of your driving time (about 10 hours), but Henson Scout Reservation, Camp Nanticoke, offers a great Cub camping program, with 3 days, 2 nights open to Cubs and Webelos, and 6 days, 5 nights for just Webelos. It's outside of Sharptown, Md. Details: http://tinyurl.com/5cftlz

I last staffed it 10+ years ago (worked there for five summers), but the camp director is a friend and the staff is as enthusiastic as ever. The Cub programs run in late July into August, and there are still plenty of spaces left this summer! (As I wrote in the other thread, the Cub program is usually overflowing, but took a major hit this year with the economy.)

Our Council (Lincoln Heritage) offers three day/two nights for Wolves and Bears, and four days/three nights for Webelos. The two programs are also different. The Cub must have a parent and is a younger based program. One they are a Webelos, they can go without a parent (just must have two leaders for every eight cubs) and get to do some things closer to Boy Scouting.

My boys just came back on Saturday from the Webelos Adventure Camp at Camp Gerber just north of Muskegon, MI. It was 4 days, 3 nights. They had a BLAST!!! If you would like more info post again on this thread. If you are interested in this, I will be happy to give you a hand.

Where'd you find all those so quickly. I couldn't find any Cub Scout camps around Alabama. My son was really bummed about it. After all his sister the Girl Scout has been attending week long camp for 3 years, since the second grade.

Try doing a google search for cub scout resident camp and local council names. Or go to home pages for nearby councils and see if they have a "camping" section. Usually there will be info about cub scout/webelos camp there.

A quick search on google turned up the following cub resident camps in AL. I don't know the state at all so maybe these aren't that close to you, but then again, maybe they are.

Camp Horne (Black Warrior Council) has a 3 day Cub resident camp. Download their leader guide here:

http://www.blackwarriorcouncil.com/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.asp?LinkKey=27062&orgkey=2295

Camp Lumpkin (Chattahoochee Council) runs cub resident camp. OK, this council is half in Georgia and half in Alabama, and I believe the actual camp is in GA, but...maybe it works for you.

Camp Alaflo (Alabama-Florida Council) runs cub resident camp. Another one of those cross-border councils! Their website isn't the best in terms of finding things, but here's a flyer:

http://www.alflcouncilbsa.org/news/CubResidentCamp2009.pdf

Camp Sequoyah (Greater Alabama Council) is running a cub resident camp but I can't find a flyer. You'd have to call the council office for info. They even seem to have a toll free phone #, 1-888-490-8955.

Here's their website: http://www.1bsa.org/default.asp?ID=2

Hope that helps!

Scouter1960

I've heard some really nasty things about Camp Gerber on this side of the state. I'm assuming by your report these may not be true. Perhaps it's just protectionist drivel as many people in my aera are growing tired of the same old things at camp run by the unchaging "dinosaurs". And the "dinosuars" are trying to keep their jobs.

I'd love to hear more about the program and the camp.

Thanks

To All,

Thanks for all the great sharing. Lisabob you are a master googler. I've tried to find things and haven't had much luck.
