Service Project this weekend...does it fulfill any requirements?

Recommended Posts

Our cub pack is doing its first service project this weekend. We are going to assist the local Veteran's Cemetery in placing small American flags by all the grave markers for Memorial Day weekend.

Are there any Wolf or Bear requirements that this would fulfill, or any other aspect of the Cub scout awards program that this would apply to?

Do you know about the US Heritage Awards? They are awards for learning about the heritage of our country, and include a service project. Most of the other requirements for the Cub Scout level award (Silver Award) are things that the boys have probably done as part of their other rank advancements.

Good Turn For America -- see http://www.goodturnforamerica.org/ . When I was with a pack, we gave the GTFA patches or pins to those groups we teamed up with as a thank you.

The Wolf Rank Requirements can be found online at http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/wolf.html#HOME and the Bear Rank Requirements at http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/bear.html .(This message has been edited by bbng)

I don't know on the top of my head, but I have a gut feeling that your service project would cover several requirements. Take a close look at the handbooks and don't forget the arrow point electives. Your project invloves citizenship, doing something outdoors, a visit to an important site, and it possibly has religious or cermonial significance. A veteran's cemetery is definitely a memorial site of historical significance.

The link Dan provided tells all about the US Heritage Awards.

The awards can be worn on the pocket as a temporary patch only, or on their patch vest, jacket, blanket, etc. They are not official BSA awards.
