Size of Summer Camps

My council has 3 camps.

 

Camp #1 is used only for Cub Weekends.

Camp #2 is used only for Troops and High Adventure Trips.

Camp #3 has both Cubs an Scouts.

 

I don't have have exect numbers but was told that:

 

Camp #2 had 6 weeks of Summer Camp with approximatly 1200 in attendance.

 

Camp #3 had aproximatly 260 Scouts for 3 weeks.

 

How many Scouts does your council summer camp serve in a summer?

- 6 x 10 day, 9 night sessions of Boy Scout Camp per season:

Camp Piercing Arrow: 600 campers/leaders per night.

Camp Sawmill: 550 campers/leaders per night

Camp Lone Star: 550 campers/leaders per night.

 

We typically fill to capacity all but 6th session, 6th session typically we run about 1200 campers.

 

Theodore Naish Scout Reservation, Bonner Springs, KS:

- 3 x 7 day, 6 night sessions of Boy Scout camp; 400 campers/leaders per night

- 10 x 3 day, 2 night sessions of Webelos Camp; 550 campers/leaders per night

- 24 x 2 day, 1 night sessions of Bear Resident Camp (a family (parent/child, 1:1 camping program under Council professional management), 200 campers/parents (100pr) per session.

 

Plus a short Venturing program, NOAC, Council contingents to Philmont, NYLT, and Powderhorn...

Camp Old Indian Scout Reservation, Travelers Rest, South Carolina.

 

7 weeks of Boy Scout Camp - about 300 scouts/scouters served each week

1 Cub Resident Camp in beginning of June - averages about 200 Cubs/Parents

8 Cub/Parent weekend sessions in October and November. There are two sessions each weekend: Friday evening to Saturday noon or Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning - all very well attended, each session with about 300.

Camp Akela (WRC)

The week our Troop was in Calumet, Akela had two sessions averaging 70 Webelos plus adults per session.

 

Reservation totals:

 

Scout camp - 500-600 Scouts/Scouters per week

times 7 weeks = 3500 to 4200 for the summer.

 

Add Akela figuring 100 per week = 700 Webelos.

 

Add 250-300 extra on Friday nights to run the Honors Program times 7 weeks = another 1750-2100.

 

Add Camp Staff of 100.

 

Friday nights ballooned to 900-1000 Scouts/Scouters in camp with the camp and honors staff present.

 

4200-4900 campers attending summer-camp and WRC for 2007.

 

And this year they dropped 8th week.

Im in Northern Star Council, which is headquartered in St. Paul and Minneapolis. The council includes 21 counties across central Minnesota (to the South Dakota Border) and includes four counties in western Wisconsin. There are over 113,000 scouts in the council.

 

There are eight camp properties owned by the council.

 

Fred C Anderson Scout Camp 260 acres

Cub Scout day camp: 14 sessions, about 50 scouts per session 700 scouts total

 

Phillippo Scout Reservation 450 acres

Cub Scout resident camp (Camp Akela): 10 sessions, about 223 scouts per session 2230 total

Additional night available for Webelos 1

Webelos Day camp: 12 sessions, about 135 scouts per session 1620 scouts total

 

Kiwanis Cub Camp 110 acres

Cub Scout resident camp: 14 sessions, about 80 scouts per session 1120 scouts total

Additional night available for Webelos 1

 

Tomahawk Scout Reservation over 2500 acres

Boy Scout camp (3 sub camps) over 5500 Boy scouts

Webelos 2 resident camp (at 4th sub camp) about 1500 Cub Scouts

 

Stearns Scout Camp over 1200 acres

Cub Scout resident camp (Camp Heritage): 10 sessions, about 80 scouts per session 800 scouts total

Webelos 2 resident camp: 8 sessions, about 75 scouts per session 600 scouts total

Looks like the summer programs serve about 8200 Boy Scouts and 8500 Cub Scouts.

 

Several of these camps are used for other camping purposes as well, such as the camporees, Webelos Woods, winter camping, and leader training.

 

So far, I personally have been to five of the properties (Fred C Anderson, Phillippo, Kiwanis, Eagle Landing, and Tomahawk) with my sons.

 

Numbers were found using the camps websites, the online reservations system (last three or four sessions), or personal visits.

Could you tell us the name of the camps?

Camp #1 is Camp Woodland.

Camp #2 is Sabattis.

Camp #3 is Camp Portaferry.

 

I orginally wrote this because our council was going to sell off Camp Portaferry and I was wondering how our camps compared to other scout camps in size.

The last few years it had very low attendance but our council did little to promote it.

 

Others suggested we sell Sabattis as it's far from our population base and unaccessable in the winter. It it does draw many OOC units for back country treks into the Adirondacks mountains and for summer camps.

 

Camp Woodland is used for Summer Cub Resident Camp.

During the rest of the year between training and unit's camping or in cabins almost every weekend is used. It's been around 75+ years and there is no talk of selling this camp.

 

Last year yt was decided not to sell the camp but they no longer offer a summer camp program.

 

I just have heard rumors that its for sale again.
