Info on Camp Daniel Boone & Camp Bob Hardin in NC

Recommended Posts

Our Troop is considering these two facilities for summer camp in 2003. Would appreciate any feedback - good and bad on these locations.

We are located near Memphis, TN and like to go to higher elevations to get a break from the heat, mosquitos & ticks... We usually take 25 Scouts and 6 adult leaders to summer camp each year.

We need to find a camp that has a good balance of activities for all ages. We usually have at least 5 new Scouts that need the basics and about 10 Scouts that are Star rank or higher who don't need merit badges and love to participate in COPE or Extreme Venture Base activities. The remainder of our group needs to earn merit badges. The key word here is "earn." We have been to some camps where the badge counselors were poor and pretty much gave away the badges without teaching the skills.

Obviously we want our summer camp to have well maintained facilities and good food. Don't want any mommas upset because Junior didn't get enought to eat.

Thanks for your help. Yours in Scouting,

John Gibson

Check this one out too.

It's foothills of NC. It still gets warm in the middle of the day but could be real cool at night for the first couple of weeks. You want the campsites across the lake from the dining hall, up in the hardwoods. The sites on the dining hall side are mostly in the pines and a lot of them have been cut because of the dreaded pine beetle.

Have fun,

Doug

Our Troop has attended Camp Daniel Boone a couple of times. It's been two years since we last went. They have a good Staff. Fairly limited on merit badges offered, however they may have improved the choices based on Troop evaluations. They have several high adventure options in addition to the traditional programs. Check their website. Sorry I don't know it off hand, though. Get a copy of their booklet. If not this year's, last year's.

I will warn you of something though, their lake is extremely cold. You would have to pre-wet yourself from a brook coming off of a mountain, in an effort to lessen the shock. Seriously, alot of Scouts and Scouters backed out of the swimm checks that Sunday. At the adult leaders meeting that night, they begged the adult leaders to take their swim checks so the Scouts would. It truly was cold.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to my recent message post. Keep those replies coming.

I just ran across another camp that looks interesting. Does anyone have any experience with Skymont Scout Reservation in Tennessee?

Thanks!!

Nighthawks459-

Skymont is an excellent camp. I took 51 boys last year from Jacksonville, FL. The staff was very accomodating to our every need. They require Bluecards in advance but will set up additional merit badge classes as Troops need them (kind of an open enrollment). They cover the entire range of experience, from first-year scouts to even our fourth and fifth-year scouts. They have an excellent COPE plus 55' climbing tower plus zip line that is available to anyone who goes through the training. They have something called Cumberland Adventures off-site for the older boys where they can put COPE skills to use. Thursday included a 180' cliff rapel. Adults received leadership training at the waterfront, certification at the climbing tower and participated with Cumberland Adventures. We're going back this year!
