What we did last weekend

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

We just got back early Wednesday morning from our yearly winter high adventure the 15Th annual Frostbite Challenge a winter campout for scouts from Canada and Southeast Alaska.

The first day (Saturday) was spent riding the Alaska state ferry Matanuska to Skagway, Alaska staying there overnight. Day two headed up the hill across the Canadian border at White Pass to Fraser, B.C. to the camping area and started creating snow caves and organizing the rest of the campsite. Day three is for events like tomahawk toss, pancake flipping, string burning, getting the snow caves and campsite judged and the favorite the canoe sled race. Day four we packed up and headed back to Skagway loaded back onto the Matanuska arriving back in Juneau at 04:45. Weather was great for snow camping ranging from approx 30f to 0f with some wind and light snow.

For those that are not familiar with the geography of southeast Alaska there are no roads connecting most of the towns to the outside world we are limited to taking ferries and accepting whatever schedule they offer.

The scouts are already planning for next year guess they had a good time.

Thats all for now

Sounds COOL (sorry)...

around here, we are lucky to see enough snow most winters to make a snow man...you would need a whole troop and two acres of ground to get enough snow to make a shelter...though two inces of snow here oft time closes school for a day or two...

Our Klondike derby sleds usually have runners we never use, and quick install wheels... we almost always use...

Glad you had a good time...keep sharing your snow adventures with the lower 48.
