BSA Recommended Den Sizes

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where exactly can I find (in print) the BSA guidelines for Cub Scout Den sizes? I have the current Leaders Handbook and cannot find it in there.

"Cub Scouting members join a Cub Scout pack and are assigned to a den, usually a neighborhood group of six to eight boys. Tiger Cubs (first-graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (second graders), Bear Cub Scouts (third graders), and Webelos Scouts (fourth and fifth graders) meet weekly."

This statement is copied directly from the BSA website. http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=cy

For the Tiger den it is not unusual to have 10 new boys start each year. A big pack like my son's manages two new Tiger dens of 10 each every year and they still need to send excess boys to other local packs to join. Each Tiger Scout has a "partner" (parent or guardian) doing everything with them so the supervision is not a problem, and with kids always dropping out you usually get 7 or 8 kids left by the time they are ready to be Wolves.

I would highly recommend limiting Tiger Dens to 5 0r 6 scouts. We have that 10 boys with ten adult partners (20 people) is a a very crowded meeting when trying to do activities especiallly if you are meeting at someones home.

You will find 5 or 6 tigers with partners much easier to handle and is mor like the wolf den they will be in next year.
