  1. If you want to register your troop for a trek at Philmont for 2021, the lottery opens on Monday... https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/registersection/
  2. MOGAMBO: January, 2019 Dallas Safari Club Convention https://www.biggame.org/convention/ A quick perusal of items up for auction -- the catalog is huge -- turns up such items as a $20,000 rifle or a chance to kill an Alaskan brown bear ($20,000 value). You can bid on the opportunity to kill a buffalo at the Philmont Scout Ranch, where Boy Scouts of America typically enjoy far less sanguine fun. https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/sports/columnists/seabury-blair/2018/12/02/mr-outdoors-big-game-and-big-prices/2164689002/ 200+ page auction guide https://www.biggame.org/
  3. ...this year one of the organization’s four “high adventure bases” — Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico — will begin hosting family scouting for families with girls or boys. Similar family programs are under development at the Summit Bechtel Family Reserve in West Virginia, says Al Lambert, an assistant chief scout executive for BSA, who leads outdoor programming efforts. “It’s an exciting time for us . and our efforts in supporting girls and families, as well as boys,” says Lambert. “We’re adapting to changing times.” Lambert says many young families want to experience ca
  4. I’m the new kid on the block on this forum, but I’d like to invite you folks to the United Methodist Scouters’ Conference at Philmont Training Center July 15-21. I’m serving as leader for the week-long conference designed for local church, district and conference Scouting coordinators, Scout leaders, Charter Organization Representatives, Committee Members, clergy, and youth leaders. Heck, if you once walked by a Methodist Church, we’d take you. The course is designed to benefit both experienced church Scouters and those new to either organization (the United Methodist Church or Scout
  5. Is there a need for an online public forum to discuss Philmont related topics? I have an acquaintance who owns WHITEBLAZE.NET, the largest online forum for backpacking/hiking. WB has forums for all the major trails including the AT, PCT, CDT, LT etc. I suggested that WB create a forum for Philmont. Considering over 20,000 Scouts and Scouters go to Philmont each year I think this would be a great opportunity to create a community to share experiences and information. I know that when I was preparing for Philmont a few years ago I visited BackpackingLight.com. However that site is a pay to joi
  6. Have two crews going to Philmont this August (Leader Guide here). Just made trek selections. The guys used a matrix to prioritize the activities they wanted to do. For them it is more about hiking from "cool thing to cool thing" and not about the miles they put down. They want to relax, enjoy their trek and have fun. That said, I've been a few times but nearly always north of the Tooth on the north part of the range. Seems most of the treks these guys have selected are around the Tooth, along Shaefer's Pass, back along Phillips Junction and around the Black Mountain area. The questions
