  1. With new members both youth and adult having to pay the full year up front and with most units now running a January to December charter it seems ideal and logical to be recruiting in January. Pay for the year and get into the program with lots of time to set aside funds for summer camps and other programs. Packs can get their new members in for the Blue n Gold anniversary events and Troops can recruit in grade 5 but have to hold off registering for two months which gives families time to set aside the funds. In the meantime they can either register with the pack and transfer or 'visit' the tr
  2. The BSA is in bad shape. The first step in fixing a problem is to identify the problem(s).A brief summary of how we got to where we are: nearly 50 years of traditional membership losses, being cast as a bigoted/prejudiced white, middle class organization because of certain 'standards' that no longer formally exist, being cast in recent years as a dangerous place to enroll your kids thanks to the massive lawsuits without regard for the outstanding youth protection standard of the BSA, mergers and consolidations resulting in reductions in service, huge reductions in the number of unit serving pr
  3. Do any of y'all do any kind of marketing of your unit during Scout Sabbath activities? (Scout Sabbath / Scout Sunday is the weekend of February 7/8 in 2020 ) Seems to me like it would be a natural opportunity for a little outreach within the CO. Let folks see what their unit does and invite kids who aren't in the program to come on out and see what it's all about. I don't think any kind of intrusive effort would be appropriate, but maybe just have some flyers on a table near the front door....or a small contingent outside the church before or after services to greet parishioners a
  4. Some of the local veterans groups that support Boy Scouts of America include AMVETS Post 57, Veterans of Foreign Wars Bruce Post 1146, the VFW Fraser-Reid Post 6691, VFW Post Menge 6756 and American Legion Post 261. They will be part of Operation Crossover 1-3 p.m. Nov. 2 at Macomb Mall in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Court. “We will have a number of area organizations and scout packs and troops at the mall in order to convince kids to join or continue in scouting,” Kevin Lauro said. “There will be a number of area youth and parents in attendance as well as some raffle prizes.”
  5. There are 3 elements to recruiting in any organization: attraction, conversion, and retention. Attraction is the realm of marketing: get the word out and pull people in. Retention is about delivering on your promise and giving value to the members. But conversion....that's where things get interesting because it's all about the vibe in the unit and showing people your energy and passion so they want to be part of the fun. Make newcomers feel welcome and show them the value that can be theirs to share, and you'll have 'em hooked! That's why I was so impressed by Bryan on S
  6. I love the tag line that emphasizes that the girls can earn Eagle so as to emphasize that's the most important thing when it comes to the "older girls program".
  7. In order to help you reach more families in an organic way, I wrote an article My Top 10 Reasons for Joining Cub Scouts. The idea is to share it in appropriate local Facebook groups in advance of your joining nights to get the interest of prospective families in a slightly different way. It's been fairly successful thus far. I hope it helps you.
  8. Is this a new program for BSA? I have heard of the Alumni Ambassadors but not this program. Is is the same? I could not ascertain what the program will do other than possibly recruiting new and alumni Scouts. Anyone know anything about this program?
  9. When my first-grader was looking at scouting, Pack 1280 didn't have anything functioning at the local elementary school. So we and a few other intrepid Tigers signed-up, and attended another Pack's meetings, although we wore 1280 uniforms. Didn't really meet as a den, I didn't know very much on what to do, and just participated in the monthly meetings and occasional outings. Last year, my Wolf's little brother became a Tiger, and a Tiger Den formed. I started leading a Wolf Den (as Pack 1280), still met with the other Pack, and wonder of wonders, the Tiger den found a leader, and they met
  10. Has anyone tried a Join Scouting Night presentation in a Middle School? What kind of turn out did you have? Was it successful? What worked? What didn't work?
