  1. [Sixty years ago] "I thrived in the woods. I loved being there so I wanted to hike, I wanted to cook, I wanted to canoe. I wanted to learn how to do it in a really good, professional way. I loved the swimming. I wanted the lifesaving. I wanted to do whatever it took to retain a high proficiency in the woods. Scouting gave me an opportunity to do all of that but more. I wanted to learn how to live in the woods. And so I kept after every merit badge that took one to the woods. I acquired the rank of Eagle Scout, but the organization wanted a different prototype for their first Eagle Sc
  2. Scout Gregory Wittine was severely disabled by cerebral palsy. "He could not walk or talk. In his wheelchair, he carried around a homemade keyboard on which he would point at individual letters and spell out words in order to communicate." By 1977 and 22 years old of age, he had earned the 24 merit badges then required for Eagle. Despite being past the age limit, his local Council awarded him Eagle Scout which National rescinded. He launched himself on a campaign to change the rules. A reporter for The New York Times visited him and asked if he had a message for people whose
  3. This year (2020) marks the 99th year since a group of 32 Eagle Scouts from Knoxville, Tennessee made a two-week long excursion to the nation's capital in the District of Columbia. The trip was not only for fun and recreation, but promoted the young Scouting movement to the public and emphasized the good character and moral living that Scouting made a central part of its message. The Eagle Scout caravan left Knoxville on July 1st and read more here...
  4. Im definitely going to fight for everything." Because no one climbs from Cub Scout to Eagle Scout, a journey of about a dozen years in his case, by accident. It requires a remarkable commitment. "When I was growing up, I thought I would not finish because it was just so long and you had to do so much. But my grandma and my auntie wanted me to finish, and I did it. It taught me so much, like how to make something out of nothing. 5. Consider the story of scout Joseph Barefoot who is now a freshman at the University of Tennessee. From the University of Tennessee website: Joseph Barefoot doesn’t seek attention for himself, but his actions to save a friend in a 2009 boating accident couldn’t keep him out of the spotlight. His heroic efforts and brush with death earned him a top Scouting award and recognition in Boys’ Life magazine and National Eagle Scout Magazine. As a UT Martin freshman, Joseph is receiving more positive attention as a key newcomer on the Skyhawk rifle team. Born in Sudbury, Ontario, and homescho
  6. Hey y’all. I was wondering if I got a ring to symbolize I got eagle to wear everyday, which finger would you wear it on. Your middle finger or ring finger, on the right hand. What do y’all think?
  7. Well, I've seen it. My 1st PL had Eagled at age 13. Great guy. Stayed in the troop until 18. His younger brother was a good scout as well. There is something to be said for moving your leadership development along. Then use what you've learned by getting Eagle to make your high school career better. But that's just me. How do you all help your young eagles (if you have them) get the most out of their early achievement?
  8. I'll just leave this little doozy from the National Council for all y'all to read here... When Do You Become An Eagle Scout?
