  1. For our March Pack meeting we will be working on Camping Preparedness. We have many new scouts and families who have never been camping. What are some ideas you would do to keep it not only informational/learning but also fun?
  2. So confused with tags and such. Just give me a basic forum and let me type. Anyway, we have an interesting possible opportunity locally with the closure of a major church with considerable property with its campus. The church is being run by the Methodist District and there are plans in the works for using the property for outreach. I have proposed that part of that be a distinctly inexpensive spot for traveling youth, Scouts or otherwise. Also, picture us developing a resource center with historical material that can be reviewed and possibly utilized in modern context, or a "How it
  3. I am looking for suggestions for someone who may have encountered this before. My son is a 3rd year, although he took a year off last year. Anyway, he has very bad seasonal allergies, which we can deal with, but he is super sensitive to the campfire smoke. He is very excited about Scouts now and wants to finish his Eagle, but needs 11 more nights of camping. In the fall, he was a bonfire party on a Saturday and was so sick that he was out of school until Thursday. He went to a camp out this weekend, and wasn't too bad when I picked him up in the late morning, but went rapidly downhill wit
  4. Hey all, My troop was been struggling with the same problem for about a year now and despite everything we try we can't get it done. Here's what happens PL reminds his patrol member that according to the duty roster it's patrol members turn to do dishes. Patrol Member either refuses or tries argue how me did it last campout (they should have to it at every campout). Patrol Leader tells SPL, and the SPL asks him to do it the patrol member usually refuses, and the SPL, PL, and other patrol members have to pick up the slack. If they tell the adult leader the SM tries to solve the problem but
  5. I see many instances where the phrase "cabin camping" is used on the Forum and it concerns me slightly, from the simple standpoint of Scout advancement. While sleeping a cabin is undoubtedly a valid/frequent/normal exercise in the annals of Boy Scout activities tradition, it does not fit within the acceptable activities to fulfill the camping requirements for Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, or Camping Merit Badge. To be clear, I am simply supplying the Forum with a resource from the BSA explaining camping requirements. I'm in no way knocking sleeping in a cabin; or letting the Scou
  6. My troop is looking into doing a two to three day backpacking trip in New England. We are a fairly new troop and this will be the first backpacking trip done by any of our scouts. One of our ideas is finding a trail where we could hike about 10 miles then camp for the night and would like to pre-park our troops trailer near the campsite with food and supplies. We would still be having the scouts backpack carrying gear and tents. Are there any recommendations in New England? Where in New England have other troops gone backpacking? Thank you in advance.
  7. So about a month or so ago I posted in the help forum explaining how my son needed additional camping nights to finish the camping merit badge. We met with council and they were fantastic giving back nights camped that the sm/mbc (one in the same) took away. We have clarity and clarification, and my son will be wrapping up the badge soon. Everything else including his eagle project, write up, letters of recommendation etc are finished. This is the last piece to be completed. When we met with our local council, they gave him a flyer showing an "overnight scouting event" at our local minor lea
  8. In a different thread, last fall, there was discussion that Bass Pro of Springfield, MO had bought out Cabelas of Sidney, NE. As of 14 Jan 16, that has not happened. Here is a 3 January 2016 article from the Omaha World-Herald website discussing the matter.
  9. It's finally fall in Texas. Last weekend the Troop did our Survival camp out. We had Webelo visitors camping with us. A good time was had by all. Next month, October, scheduled camp out is orienteering. November is cooking. What has your unit been up to? What's on the schedule?
  10. This is more for our international scouters, especially you coeducational lot. But American scouters please pipe up if you think you got something special that maybe we should visit this winter. Do you go winter camping? where? What weather do you expect? In what type of shelter? What age/sex youth? Is finding enough adult leaders a challenge?
  11. I had a Scout earn the National Outdoor award - Camping last night. My advancement chair had problems getting it at the Scout shop as no one knew anything about it. Link to award I've only seen 1 other Scout in this area with the award. Do your Scouts earn this? Are they aware of it?
