If CAC is unable to sell it as residential property, I don't know if they'll still go forward with selling it. If they do, someone should be lobbying the state to just buy it as a wildlife refuge..." ********* There are many alternatives to the sale of the property by the CAC for residential development. However, the Chicago Scouts have decided to invest what I believe is close to $1-million of their money
  2. I do apologize Jim, if your going to dis a man you should get his name right. As for the OOEC is was presented to the public as being organized to save the camp not just the land. If the OOEC feels that calling what ever they were to set up "Owasippe" would make up for the loss of the camp then I guess I'm just a romantic because I don't Late 70's early 80's Blue Lake Township rezoned the property from what ever it was to a higher rate. Chicago Area Council requested for years to have the zoning changed BLT refused. 1990 (?)BLT agreed to rezone to reduce the tax on the camp. When CAC annou
  3. The State of Michigan allows not-for-profits to hold 400 acres of land tax free That's a fair amount of land. Texas's limitations are 1,000 acres for an organization in any one county, and there is only one scout camp I can think of that exceeds that (Sid Richardson or SR2, which is 2500 acres). To keep all of Owasippe tax exempt, the land could be subdivided into 400 acre parcels, with individual councils and other not-for-profits owning them. If CAC is unable to sell it as residential property, I don't know if they'll still go forward with selling it. If they do, someone shou
  4. Gold Wing, I realize you are relatively new to planet Earth. Owasippe is in the state of Michigan. Thats the one that sorta looks like a mitten in the middle of the Great lakes, well Lake Michigan on the west side and Lake Huron on the east with a touch of Lake Erie as well
  5. Friday was the final day of testimony in the matter of the Chicago Area Council vs. Blue Lake Township in the 14th Circuit Court of Michigan. CAC is the Plaintiff. The trial was reduced from around nine issues down to two legal points by Judge William Marietti. The judge dismissed the other Plaintiff claims. The issues in the trial were: 1) Was the zoning of "Forest Recreational - Institutional" for the Owasippe property (one of five camps so zoned in the township)arbitrary and cappricious? and 2) Was such zoning by the township a "taking" of the value of the property? Closi
  6. I'd say you get whole cloth red felt at the store and make a larger vest when a boy grows out of the smaller version. The Scout Shop does have vests in XL but you may need to make even bigger ons for some scouts. Side note one of the patches on the red vest in the picture that comes with the store bought vest is from Owasippe my council camp. If the boys would wear patches on their Red Wool Jacket why would they have necessarily out grown wearing them on a red vest that fit? As a scout we wanted our patches unused for trading purposes but I earned several very striking patches from events and
  7. I have only been following this since July... My brother and nephew were with a troop from NWSC that attends Camp Wolverine each year, and I had to drive up there to pick up my nephew for a family event near Grand Rapids. On the way into the camp, just about all of the houses had "Save Owasippe" signs, and after asking, my brother filled me in on the rest. I can understand why CAC might be reluctant to retain ownership of the camp. At 200 miles and about four hours of driving from Chicago, it's not exactly convenient for use as a council camp. But, it's sad to see land of that size
  8. Time has passed. How goes Chicago Area Council and Camp Owasippe? ""How high's the water, mama?""
  9. I don't know what Owasippe looks likes, but any location will have to be predominantly flat. The great majority of Jambo volunteers are not young! Adopting a site that is hilly or rugged would be a disaster in the making.
  10. A friend of mine saw my post here and reminded me that White Hall MIchigan is practically on the WEST shore of Lake Michigan. 10 miles east would make for a mighty soggy camp! Owasippe lies to the WEST of White Hall. Actually I should say Camps becasue we have more than one on the reservation. Camp Black Hawk is a dinning hall camp with swimming in Big Blue Lake. Camp Wolverine the meals are delivered to your site three times a day so it's troop camping without the cooking and cleaning. Swimming is in a pool. I believe a troop can still arrange to use Camp Hiawatha Beach which is lone tro
  11. After a funfilled CSDC, and sending the Boy off to summer camp (both church sponsored and Scout), and after reading about "favorite camps" and "Huh?????"' I find myself wondering.... ...And what is the news from Chicago and Owasippe? Hello?
  12. And what is the news from Chicago and Owasippe? Hello?
  13. Ill cast my vote for Owasippe Scout Reservation, Twin Lakes Michigan. On Michigans Western edge just east of Whitehall north of Muskegon. Over 4000 acres of Scouting fun. http://scarlet_sassafras.tripod.com/id2.html We have Camp Blackhawk a dinning Hall camp with aquatics area on Big Blue Lake. We have Camp Wolverine an in site dinning camp where meals are delivered to each site. Aquatics is done in a pool for swimming and Lake Wolverine for boating. Fisherman will love this camp, fresh fish is a great evening treat. Both Camps Blackhawk and Wolverine offer loads of merit badge o
  14. This is a very sad situation for all of scouting. Maybe thats why I see so much Owasippe stuff on ebay these days? Can anyone tell me if the camp is open during all this trouble or is it in "limbo"? jkhny writes 'dues to national declined 30% or more, council contributions dropped 40%, assets decreased by 30%, and adult leadership dropped by a few hundred'. Well, thats exactly what they want in order to show a need to sell! Plead poverty and get rich--thats what America has come to. My union recently had to go to arbitration over 1 percent for our collectively bargained wage increase! It sound
  15. Beavah, The annual meeting is set for January 27, 2007. National has already said that no matter what the outcome of the vote, our current SE (the guy who started the whole "we don't belong in the real estate business" "sell the assets and bank the cash") Jim Stone, will remain our SE until the Owasippe sale is final. This is the result of talks centering around buying out the SE's current contract and replacing him with someone not predisposed to selling all our camps. National has made it pretty clear they want the money in the bank. At a recent fund raiser brochures were passed ou
  16. 4 months since the last post. Here is an update. The Boy Scouts of America (National) has now directly operated the Chicago Area Council since June 1, 2006. The Nationally installed Chicago Council Directors have attempted to accelerate the legal efforts to achieve a sale of the Owasippe property as quickly as possible. Critical, it appears, that the Court action be completed before there is a chance that members of the Chicago Council can vote for a Board of Directors. The Circuit Court effort blew-up on the faces of the National and Chicago Scout Executives. In c
  17. I've been on rifle ranges many times without permission when they were not operating, but it's not the same thing (I was also a range safety officer at Camp Perry). If you can't see that, I can't explain it to you. Nobody ever got drowned on a waterfront beach as far as I'm aware. As I mentioned, there was nobody on the waterfront except us and the staff. I have walked onto "their" waterfronts many times without "their" and that's the only one I've ever been chased off of. I'm sure that Owasippe has a great safety record and I have never been to a Scout camp where there has been a water
  18. There will always be adults and older kids who think you have to have plenty of rules to make things run properly. I think Eamonn has hit the proper balance. I've always felt we should have as few rules as possible and enforce them with enlightenment. It is not the end of the world if a Scout travels out of uniform. Waterfront personnel are usually the worst offenders. Some years ago, we took our troop to Camp Owasippe. We had a wonderful experience and just loved all the staff we came into contact with. One exception. We went down to the waterfront to respond to a request for adul
  19. When things started going wrong at our Camp Owasippe (the Council pulling similar stunts), the CAC decided they "needed" to sell the camp, despite the amount of offers of help ($ for repairs & workers to do it for 0), and now we are in the battle to keep this camp... Hope all works out for you. ScouterHelen
  20. I would also like to know where this kind of Scouting HIstory can be found. I know Chicago's number is 118 and thought it was one of the oldest. I don't recall ever hearing that we merged with anyone. We did change our name at one point from Chicago Council to Chicago Area Council to reflect that we covered more than just the city proper. I do know that our Camp Owasippe was formed in 1911 by the Chicago Boy Scouts. I don't however dispute the title of oldest council, I think Trevorum and Miki101 should be givin a "Class A" salute. Remebering where we came from helps us retain who we are
  21. Jschlich, I too have no expectations that a new Board of Directors will succeed in rescinding the sale agreement. My hope is that we will prevail on January 14th and a new Board will be faced with a united community opposed to the sale made up of people local to the camp and those registered CAC members here in Chicago who know the value of retaining our last piece Nature. So as not to seem duplicitous I must state that you are far more concerned with the residents of Blue Lake Township et.al. that I am. The impact of the re zoning and sale to the local community will be nothing les
  22. OGE, In respose to your "what would happen then" question we won't get to that point in two years if we win this fight. First, the assests at our Camps have been managed poorly for years. CAC owned two plots of land, one forty miles west of Chicago and another in White Hall Michigan. The local camp (Hoover) has been sold for around 18 million dollars, the Michigan camp, Owasippe Scout Reservation hosts five scout camps and a family camp. When those who camped there in the 60's returned with our sons and scouts in the late 80's we saw the problems and moved to correct them. Use of

  24. I also looked up the Owasippe situation, and it appears that the person who was removed from membership led a demonstration picketing outside the service center, and had considered picketing board members' homes until warned not to do so by BSA legal counsel. This is getting pretty far from constructive criticism from the inside. It does seem reasonable at some stage of escalation of conflict for BSA to kick a person out. Where exactly you draw that line I don't know--a single, respectfully worded letter to the editor of the local paper probably shouldn't do it, but picketing the service ce
