  1. It's still an issue funding. Owasippe was sold because they could not afford to keep it open, given dwindling attendance. If the sale is blocked by the zoning committee, then the Chicago Council still has the problem of how to fund Owasippe, which is why they sold it in the first place. The problem isn't solved by blocking the sale.
  2. Yep..it was sold to a developer but some of it was sold off to Camp Gerber adjacent to their property. Unfortunately, Gerber could not raise the funds to purchase in time... here is the local article - Banker to buy Boy Scout land near Whitehall Macatawa Bank founder finalizing $19.4 million deal for 4,700 acres By PATRICK REVERE Staff writer The founder and CEO of Macatawa Bank is finalizing a deal with the Chicago Boy Scouts council to purchase 4,700 acres of forest land near Whitehall, about 12 miles northeast of Muskegon. Benjamin A. Smith, who also operates S

How about boys we need to raise money for this if you want to go. I did a camp promotion in a small town on the outskirts of chicago. (they went to Owasippe this summer) The troop took advantage of the poor economy since there were plenty of open slots on the council contingent. They raised enough money with car washes, popcorn and candy that 22 boys ans 3 adults went for free. Also there is money availble if the council jamboree committee does thei

  5. Oak Tree, COR's even in force don't really have any control over what the pros want to do. Camp owasippe of the Chicago council is a prime example. Council wanted to sell the camp. Supporters of the camp rallied the troops. COR's came out in force to vote down the new executive board. They did so in a 5 to 1 vote. They had another vote a month later and the same thing happened, the board was voted down by the volunteers with voting power. Then an intersting thing happened. A pro from national came with a some top secret rule that states if a board is voted down twice, that national can appoint
  6. Can you say "Owasippe"? http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=87008#id_137760 Oh, yes, National can too jump in to "help" troubled Councils. The problem is who defines the trouble? The CORs must participate in the governing of the Council, or accept what happens without compalaint. It's called "democracy".
  7. UCEagle72 cites directly from the current Rules and Regulations that there is nothing written about a cor actually being a member of the co. Yet the national website states otherwise. I have seen dual sets of policies and procedures before in the realm of advancement. I have personally experienced the SE making his own rules under the guise that he is interpreting an official rule or regulation. The SE made up rules actually contradicted the official rules and regulations but alas, it wasnt convenient to the council to follow the rules. And the volunteers aren't capable of understanding
  8. Much closer to you and 100 years old. Owasippe Scout reservation in Twin Lakes Michigan www.chicagobsa.org They don't list provisional camp but if you a willing to work I am sure they can work it out. They do have provisional backpacking trips on the North country trail too.
  9. ASM1 - Re-reading the posts I did not find one that said you were "Nosey" or told you to "mind your own business." What I did find were people, involved in their OWN scouting communities, who simply asked what the heck you thought THEY could do that would influence a council that was, in many instances, across the country from them! You responded in the following manner : "This forum has lost my respect." "If you ignore this, you do not deserve to be in Scouting." "I am sorry for you." "You folks are a joke." Wonderful responses. How scout-like, insightful and
  10. You folks are a joke. ScoutNut, Bob White, wow! The old saying comes to mind, "Can't see the forest for the trees" A little bit of facts. I grew up in the CAC program as a scout, then as an ASM with my oldest son. CAC was huge, roundtable was a true event. I have been aware of the CAC problems for some time because my business takes me to Chicago often. I still have friends in CAC today. But the Owasippe sale set me off. The CAC population has been shrinking many years and my opinion in this forum is just a reflection of the feelings of some people there. They are sick of the lack of recruitme
  11. A highly placed individual in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), on condition of anonymity, announced today that the preparations for moving the National Jamboree from Fort. A. P. Hill to The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reservein West Virginia have not been progressing at the expected pace. The long-term contingency plan had been to hold the 2013 National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill if The Summit is not ready. In a surprise announcement, however, the Department of Defense notified the Boy Scouts of America in March that A.P. Hill would not be available. The Summit should still be a
  12. yes, Owasippe is alive and well. There is still some outstanding legal stuff about zoning (no longer for sale)but we are cooling forward to a 2011 100th aniversary celebration for the camp. I am on the camping committee and heard nothing but good things about the 2009 season. Lots of defered maintenance has been done but there is lots more to do. There is accutally a total of 5 operating camps: Camp Blackhawk Dining Hall, Camp Wolverine Hot Pack food served in site, Camp Carlen used for Webelos camp, wood badge and NYLT, Hiawatha Beach for Lone troop camping, and Reneker for family campi
  13. I was aquatics staff in 1968 and staff cook in 1969. For a number of years I taught Red Cross Swimmin. I still cook for 25 people at holiday dinners. Great start at CBG. Lodge Chief for a year. Lots of fine memories. Saturday nights in Wausau. Laundry runs to Mattoon. Canoe trip when Jim Rumchack had to bend a Grumman canoe in half to get it out from under the water roll. Waterskiing with Pete Kleinpaste. Train stories from Cecil Piggott. Drove nearby last week (august 2009) and I searched my GPS for the lake near Birnamwood, but I could not recall its name. Darn busy life. Baker-\
  14. Took our troop to Blackhawk (dining hall) at Owasippe in the late 80's. We had a great experience. Long time ago, but they had the best staff I think I've ever found in a Scout camp.
  15. Chicago Area Council (Owasippe Scout Reservation is actually in W. Michigan) offers a 5 day Webelos resident camp, see flyer here: http://chicagobsa.doubleknot.com/openrosters/DocDownload.asp?id=49156 Upon looking around I also found several 4 day/3 night webelos resident camps within driving distance. I know 4 days isn't that much better than 3, but maybe a change of location would make it more exciting too: Black Swamp Area Council in NW OH . Registration form here (Webelos resident camp is on 2nd page): http://www.bsac449-bsa.org/assets/pdfs/Forms/Smoke-Signals-ad-Cub-Camp
  16. The article doesn't say the BSA is dropping their appeals. It is dropping the sale. Not surprising given the state of the economy and the strong chance that the purchaser's financing has probably dried up. They may also have tested the political waters in Michigan and discovered they were unlikely to win their appeal - but that's just speculation. Regardless, Owasippe is off the block for the time being.
  17. It is a pleasure to pass the word that the sales agreement for the Chicago Council to sell the Owasippe property has been terminated. Also, a Stipulation And Order Of Dismissal [with prejudice] has been agreed to between the Chicago Council and the Township concerning the zoning issues that have been in court. Several years of grass roots effort by many has been recognized by these actions of the Chicago Council. The complete message from the Council President can be found at www.chicagobsa.org.
  18. I just became aware of the T.I. situation. I wrote the article on the oldest camps a number of years ago that some of you are referencing. In my estimation Owassipe (1911) is the oldest BSA camp in the country followed by T.I. and Camp Teetonkah (in Michigan), both dating to 1913 as far as being local council summer camps. As far as I know, Owasippe, or rather the disposition of it by the Chicago Council is still mired in legal issues. The third of the three oldest camps, Teetonkah, was on the sale block a number of years ago after a council merger. The local folks in Jackson Michigan did the
  19. The Board of Directors for the Chicago Area Council have voted to terminate the contract to sell Owasippe Scout Reservation. The sale will formally be terminated when both parties have signed the agreement to terminate the contract. CAC has spent some 1M dollars seeking to rezone the 4700 acres so that it could be developed. Volunteers and Scouts of CAC wait with held breath. A Scout is Tenacious! LongHaul
  20. please note, This is not america's oldest scout camp. There is at least one, Owasippe, that has it beat by 2 yrs.
  21. Owasippe operated 6 weeks of camp in 2008. Opened 6/29. Last day was 8/9.
  22. The core issue of the Chicago Council decision to sell Owasippe has not changed. That was decided more than 3.5 years ago. At issue has been the decision to sell to a residential developer. The Council took on an obligation to sell to the developer, in exchange for over $19-million. In addition the Council took on the obligation to have the entire property zoning changed from Recreational to Residential. The Council has already spent more than $1-million to effect a zoning change. The expense has been paid from Council operating funds. There has been no special fundraising nor appea
  23. Greetings - I'm trying to assemble information on recently-closed or up-for-sale Scout camps. I've found a few scattered examples (big ones including Owasippe, Avery Hand, Onway) but was wondering if anyone knew of a list - even for a starting point - or if we could assemble one here. I'm mainly looking for camps closed within about the last five years. Please PM me with any questions. Thanks...
  24. A Circuit Court Opinion has been issued that solidly sides with the township's zoning of the Owasippe property. Residential housing as proposed by the Chicago Council has never been allowed on the property and has ruled that the township has the ability to maintain that designation. With probably more than $1-million already spent on the case it has been stated by Council officials that an appeal will go forth.
  25. LH writes: "I do apologize Jim, if your going to dis a man you should get his name right." ********* Yes, it is rather important to get names correct. I guess how important it is for you to dis someone is a judgement call that only you can make. Take the best shots you can man. I can take it. ********* LH further writes: "Late 70's early 80's Blue Lake Township rezoned the property from what ever it was to a higher rate. Chicago Area Council requested for years to have the zoning changed BLT refused." and also wrote: "I was angry when Blue Lake Township or
