  1. The following is from Owassippe Staff Association web site(http://www.owasippe.net/). "CONSERVATION DISTRICT SAYS "NO" TO CHANGES! Blue Lake Township received huge support of their current zoning as the Muskegon Conservation District passed a formal Resolution to not change the zoning of Owasippe. In light of the drastic rezoning that the Chicago Area Council, Boy Scouts of America has asked for, this Resolution clearly puts the Council proposal at odds with the nature of Owasippe. The Owasippe Outdoor Education Center proposal preserves the current zoning and includes the ultima
  2. I am not in the CAC, but I am in a neighbouring council. It is nice that you are concerned about CAC and Owasippe. However it is not nice the way you are going about it. "If you know the facts you will soon see that this council used to be one of the strongest in the nation." Facts? What facts? You NEVER stated any facts. "Now through shear ignorance they have so few scouting units that they cannot cover the cost of running this camp." Ignorance? Ignorance of what? Also, nothing that I could find about this council says anything about the loss of Scouting Units being
  3. I cetainly can not speak for Long Term but I will speak for myself. Above I have given the reasons I feel it is important for the Owasippe property, and a program of Scout camping and summer staff experience, be continued in that location further into the 21nd Century. While the politics in Chicago Council seems to burden the comments I made in opposition to my reasoning....so be it. I'm all for Owasippe being a place for BSA members (AND MANY MORE YOUTH) to available in the future. I have no economic or other vested interest in the Owasippe property as has been suggested b
  4. The news from Chicago and Owasippe such that it is. Owasippe has opened for its 96 th consecutive summer. Per the agreement we have with our council and those who are attempting to purchase the land, because we have opened this year we are guaranteed the option to open next year for our 97th. As far as I know program is running fine though attendance is down somewhat with troops beginning to look elsewhere in anticipation of Owasippe closing. That will not happen if everyone would stand together in the fight but even in our home troops there is apathy. The Chicago Area Council is locked i
  5. Well as you last remember we had our vote and rejected the executive board proposed. The attorney for National read us the riot act and warned of dire repercussions for rejecting it a second time. The dedicated scouter of CAC submitted a list of proposed changes to the list of candidates that would satisfy the concerns of the CORs and MALs. As a result of the suggestions(?) Instead of changing the person slated to occupy the position of Executive Vice President to a candidate acceptable to the "masses" the position was dropped. Once approved the Board can reinstate the position and fill it
  6. LongHaul - I accept your point as you present it. Yes, there are many actions by the Council Professionals and the CAC Board over many years that are felt to not be in the long-term interests of the rank and file of the Council. I can accept that the decisions concerning the sale of the camping properties may have been the "straw that broke the back of the volunteers." The difficulty I have in recognizing the lawsuit in Chicago as "two fronts of the same war" are several. First, I have no expectation of a new Board to be able to dismiss a sales agreement for the property by a vo
  7. Those of us who were around during the Owasippe struggle might laugh at the suggestion that councils are independent.
  8. With the probability that an appeal is forth coming everyone can help by sending what they can to; Blue Lake Township Legal Fund 1491 Owasippe Road Twin Lake, MI 49457 This will help insure that the Township can fight the appeal. For those with the optimist view on things you can support the OOECs effort to purchase the property; Make checks payable to the Owasippe Outdoor Education Center, earmark them for the Save Owasippe Fund and mail them to the OOEC at P.O. Box 212, Whitehall, MI 49461. LongHaul
  9. Gold Winger writes: "A group of people have banded together to try to save this camp from becoming yet another place for people to park their BMWs and SUVs. CAC and the potential saviours are battling it out as we speak." This is not totally correct. The so called "potential saviours" and the CAC are NOT battling. It is correct to say that a group of people have banded together to prevent what is describe AND to make it possible for a Scout summer camp to operate under the Owasippe banner as it has for almost 100 years. The so called battle is between the township and the CAC.
  10. >>It is the members of the Chicago Council who want the houses built.<< Some people just can't see past their own noses Joe. You post in a Scouting forum and for many years were one of us but on this issue you just can't see past your nose. IF those "save OWASIPPE" signs were actually intended to mean SAVE BLUE LAKE TOWNSHIP the I say those involved are as much a bunch of hypocrites as are the Executive Board that started all this. IF those originators of the save OWASIPPE campaign sought to use the name and emotional power associated with it to champion their fight then I hope Sto
  11. First let me reply to eolesen's post. Owasippe is right about 200 miles from Chicago it's about a 3.5 hr drive. Our neighbor to the north, NorthEast Illinois Council has it's Summer camp in Pearson Wisconsin about 285 miles away at 5 hours drive and they are expanding. A foot note is that the current SE from CAC was SE in NEIC and did try to sell their camp but was stopped by the executive board. As for the elections.... After the slate was turned down National sent a representative to "speak" with the voting members. The voting members were told in no uncertain terms that; Our SE would remain
  12. The waters are rising and running bright green with the monies being spent by both sides in the battle. Currently this case is in its second week before a judge in the 14th Circuit Court in Muskegon Michigan. The Chicago Area Council attorneys, along with the Scout executive and Council President have been trying to convince the court that the development and creation of 1278 residential sites and the influx of a projected 3604 residents on the 4765acres now comprising the Owasippe Scout Reservation would not negatively impact the community. It is the Councils position that the 4765 acres i
  13. I have just returned from Owasippe's 100th Celebration. At this point CAC (via the new Exec) is firmly behind Owasippe for another 100 years. They have added more sessions for Webelos summer camp using Carlen(unofficially Camp Carlen appears to be their new location for their Webelos summercamp). They are planning on expanding the number of Webelos sessions next year. As they work that part of the program they should see increased attendance at Troop level increasing their overall numbers.
  14. The saga goes on. Shortly before the opening of th 96th year at Owasippe the new President of the Chicago Area Council released an "Open Letter" to the local community around Owasippe. The letter asks for comment from the community. Getting an update fom the community is always welcome and certainly strikes a conciliatory tone. At the same time the Chicago Council is rabidly pressing forth with long and intense legal depositions of the Township Officials. I guess that is also is a way to collect comments from the local community but, it is a rather distasteful method to use
  15. This is the 100th Anniversary of Owasippe Scout Reservation. The centennial website is www.owasippe100.org If you want to take your troop to America's oldest operating scout camp go to www.chicagobsa.org/owasippe See you there! Herb Dulzo CAC
  16. Thank you for your message local 1400! I had the opportunity to visit Franconia and spend some time on that trip touring through the White Mountains NF. It was awesome! There are some exciting experiences available there and I hope the folks from the East Coast take advantage of them. Mount Washington in the winter would be a true challenge to anyone from the Rocky Mountain States. Back to the topic! The Michigan residents in the Owasippe community have contested the efforts by the Chicago Council every step of the way. The result of the September, 2006 National/Chicago Council a
  17. Since you are posting from St. Paul I assume you are talking about Many Points. MP and our camp Owasippe have a common thread by the name of Wint Hartman. Once he developed Many Points to a Troop type camp with family camp he camp to work for chicago area council and help develop Owasippe scout reservation to the troop model with a family camp.
  18. The Owasippe Staff Assoc invested $5,000 this year into the restoration and upgrading of the Stephen Fossett Sailing Base Outpost? The fleet is now up to 13 vessels with two more on the way by the Spring of 2007. The volunteer base in CAC has not given up on Owasippe and continues to provide an excellent program. Our troop has attended every year since we formed. Owasippe also offers a challenging High Adventure Program of hiking and canoeing in the Manistee National Forest. LongHaul
  19. Councils ARE the CORs. How would National justify that change? Council mergers are orchestrated by National, but the Councils are by definition (so I thought) separate corporate entities, incorporated in each particular state, yes? That is where Chicago and Owasippe got in to trouble, with National coming in and insisting that the Council Execs be replaced to National's satisfaction and trying to force the sale of the camp. How's Nantucket doing?
  20. The Summit is one more opportunity. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer cherce, as the carny barker said. Brings up the problem visited in other threads: Promotion and use of Scout properties. If BSA had the membership to truly utilize the properties we have available (Philmont, Council camps, Owasippe, Bayport, etc. ) we might not have the problem of sell offs. Then again, if BSA promoted itself as the young person's outdoor adventure outfit, rather than the good citizen education outfit, we might have a chance to BE the GCE outfit by means of being the YPOA outfit.
  21. Anyone who followed the Owasippe situation in Chicago a few years back got a real eye opener. The chartered organizations refused to vote in the Board of Directors slated by national. The execs at national responded by threatening to pull the councils charter. Yes, on paper, the chartered organizations vote in the council BOD, who then hire the executives. In reality, the execs choose the slate for the BOD. We need to have real elections. We need to have real oversight of the executives. We might even learn that we don't really need the executives.
  22. Although far removed from the Northeast IIllinois Council, I still know a number of people who are quite well plugged in there. Yes it is a council that serves some of the wealthiest communities in the Chicago area, but the money they raise doesn't come easy. They have been trying for years to raise a capital campaign with limited success. From what I have heard was that the NEIC while party to the merger talks, simply did not see any benefit in joining up with the other councils. Three Fires Council ( western suburbs) also said no thanks. NEIC might have joined had there been guarantees
  23. I have to give a bit more perspective on the Owasippe matter. The court action in Chicago is concerned about leadership of the Council at the Board level. The Council has had continuing problems for more than a decade. The fact that Learning For Life represents 70%+ of what the Council counts as "membership" is more an indication of the long-term problem in the opinion of many traditional Scouters. Are there other Councils where the traditional scouting programs represent 30% or less that what the Council reports as their membership? The Owasippe sale is a seperate matter an
  24. >Rather than weep over not being able to go to Owasippe why not grab >your pack and go somewhere else, it's a big world. I don't see anyone "weeping" over Owasippe. The deal to sell the land was done in a very unusual way; in a way that gives the appearance of having done an end run around those in the Chicago Area Council that were against the sale. Owasippe should be a special place for Scouting. It is the oldest continuously operating Boy Scout camp in the U.S. If you include contiguous open land, it is probably large enough to hold the Jamboree if the military stops supportin
  25. The letter below was published in response to one trying to justify the sale of Owasippe. It was forwarded as part of a package but it sums things up nicely. The volunteers there have voted down the candidates for their board twice but cannot oust curretn leadership Note the comments referring to Learning for Life. Chicago was teh center of a scandal regarding its precurser program in the 1970's. Is this the future of Scouting? Sell off all the camps, ignore the SCouters and focus on LFL because ther you can BUY numbers (of fake them easier) BTW the National head of LFL i
