  1. I'm in the non-issue camp. Let the young man pray the way he's been taught, use it as a conversation starter and make sure the unit knows other options are also acceptable. Hand out a bunch of those coexist bumper stickers and celebrate the diversity. I'd much rather listen to a person pray earnestly in their own tradition than suffer through some bland beige politically correct mush. Tolerance and acceptance are not the same as agreement and compliance; disagreement does not equal hate; me being me doesn't diminish you being you.
  2. So, what you're saying is being an outdoor club is no longer an exploitable niche. In that case the logical solution is to take advantage of the exploitable commodities and expand into other exploitable niches. The largest youth-serving organization in the country (4H) has widely expanded their program from their ag roots. So has FFA. Models are out there. I can't afford the dues for an organization that's going to try to compete with the Federal, State and Local governments for creating outdoor literature and spaces (can't really afford the taxes either!). Nor can I afford the dues f
  3. I've hesitated to reply because I have biases born out by experience. But, I'll offer the following thoughts: - Decide whether the crew will be an appropriate place for the boys who are dual registered to do boy scout advancement stuff. I know they can, but be sure it's understood between crew/troop. - Be frank with the troop leadership that some of the boys who join the crew will leave the troop. It's ok but not all dual registered youth will have time or inclination for both. - Don't use troop outings or meetings as cover for a "quick" venturing officers meeting - Don't go on a tro
  4. Well, that's not clear. The Iowa Civil Rights Commission has removed the document from their site but the relevant paragraph from the story I quoted is: As the complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa explains, the commission published its position in a publication titled “A Public Accommodations Provider’s Guide to Iowa Law.†In a question-and-answer section, the document asks, “Does this Law [the Iowa Civil Rights Act] Apply to Churches?†The guide answers the question by saying, “Sometimes." Iowa law provides that these protections do not

  6. OK, and that's bad why? My council runs a winter camping program. Folks who complete the course get a lanyard with acrylic cubes. Nobody in CA knows what those are either. Small/Local <> bad. Not my experience. I've run into Mic-O-Say folks a few times in my adult scouting career and enjoyed my conversations with them. All camps have their traditions. Mic-O-Say is nearly 100 years old. If it's still keeping older scouts engaged and working for Bartle there's something to it. The Mic-O-Say traditions at the camp of my youth are still strong and growing. I guess we'll
  7. ok, well first, other than the OP, who said it was a secret society? My experience with the Tribe of my youth and the OA today is that a parent or leader that makes a concerned query about the program will get the information they want to make a decision. Participation is voluntary. Next, the things I mentioned are available through Boy Scouting but were expanded and increased through my participation in the Tribe. I grew up in a very small town, being in the Tribe gave me multiple opportunities far beyond what I received through the Troop alone. Mic-O-Say, like OA and Venturing and Se
  8. I can reply for my experience: - A sense of pride in work completed at camp during conclaves - A sense of belonging to an organization bigger than myself - Opportunities to practice leadership at various levels in various tasks - Opportunities to understand responsibility to others - Friends - Fellowship Your hypothetical folks in NY probably wouldn't know the meaning of the patches on my scout uniform. I was in the Navy for a few years, those folks in NY wouldn't understand the meaning of the ribbons on my uniform. That's doesn't take away their meaning and value to me.
  9. I was in a Mic-O-Say spin off (combination of Mic-O-Say and OA actually) at the summer camp I attended as a youth (70s into the 80s). The Scout Exec that created the program in the old Southeast Iowa Council came from HOAC. Frankly, it was a great program. The paint stations were a draw for many older youth to continue coming to camp and stay involved in scouting. When the rest of scouting was struggling with the ISP, we were at camp! Adult association, youth fellowship, personal development, youth leadership, service to council and camp, and strong value system reinforcement. Yeah, it w
  10. Clearly we need regulation in order to protect the children .
  11. As a guy who lives on the flight path for O'Hare (well quite a ways out but still on the path), I can assure you the air is already full of machines whizzing around delivering packages . That said, if using drones for deliveries takes delivery trucks off the roads are we really less safe? As for privacy, that's easy, just ban the government from using drones...... I'd argue the 200 or 500 drones problem is self-regulating. People spend good money for the things they are unlikely to use them in a place where they could be damaged. If we limit where they can be used it's more likely to
  12. There you go talking about that old-timey liberty and stuff.
  13. Fair number of stupid comments over at the WaPo version of the story. Including a narrative about how the camp leaders wanted to keep the dead eagle in order to pluck the feathers for OA head dresses. These kinds of stories are good for 4H recruitment in my neck of the woods. Also a brand that parents trust with none of the baggage and gov't sponsorship to boot!
  14. Well, I'm about to go on my daily urban walk. I expect I'll see oak, maple, spruce and locust trees; multiple prairie plants, maybe some cat tails; robins, starlings, gulls, geese and if I'm lucky parakeets; squirrels and maybe rabbits. Recently lost all the Ash trees to the EAB. Not saying it's perfect but gotta meet people where they are, no?

  17. I don't know anything about the app but have a few questions. - Can you turn it into a patrol competition? Maybe one patrol as antagonist (Team Rocket?) and another as the protagonist? - Can you use it for a meeting opener or closer? Get your patrol work done and we'll go play the game? - Can all your scouts participate equally? Do they all have smart phones? Can it be a teamwork thing? - Can you tie it into another skill? Play the game but plot your location on a paper map when you find the pokemon?
  18. Everything has perspective. My son is autistic. I advocate for him in situations where he's unable to do so for himself. Happily, those situations are becoming fewer and fewer. If the original poster of the slur snowflake had ever seen me or my wife advocating for our son, he probably would have accused me of being a hyperactive helicopter parent. Of course, he'd have done so with absolutely no knowledge of me or my son or the situation. So yeah, when I hear a scouter use the word generically, it bothers me significantly. I just assume the speaker has the arrogance of ignorance. Been d
  19. Well, agree or disagree with the membership decisions, I thought the BSA made some remarkably clear statements during the process. Here are a few from http://www.scouting.org/MembershipStandards/Resolution/FAQ.aspx: It's not clear to me these principles were applied by the Denver Council in this particular case.
  20. Nobody said anything about depravity, save you. I've just been pointing out that the Hooters brand could quite easily be considered inconsistent with an organization whose brand is outdoor skills, character development, and moral and ethical decision making. So in the end we have one mom who was happy to have Hooters there and one that is thinking about pulling her son from the program. Not exactly a resounding victory for day camp.

  22. Your daughter's troop and the leaders made a specific decision to attend their event. I assume if one of the parents had concerns they could have held their child back. The parents sending their boys to this day camp with the Hooters women weren't given that same consideration.
  23. I said nothing about the women involved. I've specifically focused on the Hooters Brand.
