  1. When I took over as Scoutmaster I told the Troop Committee that we would be a 100% Boys Life unit. At first the Scouts would ask me why they had to take it. Then I started a quiz contest at every COH with a prize to the winner. Then they started reading it. Now the PLC uses it to help plan the year. Do the parents think it's a good investment. I've had no one complain in the last 7 years. The committee would be doing a diservice to the Scouts if they think $800.00 isn't worth it. Dancin
  2. isvirtual wrote in his first response: 5) Are the expected hours itemized and reasonable Where in the Life to Eagle Project Workbook does it say there are expected hours. The workbook states on page 2, SIZE: How big a project is required? There are no specific requirements, as long as the project is helpful to a religious institution, school, or community. The amount of time spent by you in planning your project and the actual working time spent in carrying out the project should be as much as is necessary for you to demonstrate your leadership of others. By using the term, exp
  3. Try using Saddle Soap. I've used it for years. I only have to put one coat on a year. The soles of my hiking boots wear out before the leather does. Dancin PS I've also used mink oil. It works great too.
  4. Eagle Foot, I just recently told the troop committee I'm stepping down as Scoutmaster in February 05. One of my ASM's feels that we should be planning for the Scouts and not letting them plan with our guideance and advice. We have had a couple of poor SPL's and things were a little ragged. I had talked with the youth, both the SPL's and the whole troop about them planning their program and making it work, but it just stayed ragged. The ASM thought I should replace the SPL and he and I should start planning meetings and outings for the troop. We now have a strong SPL and have planned unt
  5. I sat down and calculated the numbers. If a individual drives a group of Scouts to an outing or event that is 250 miles round trip and gets 20 miles to the gallon the following are the calculations: number of gallons used = 12.5 average price per gallon in my area = $2.00 total cost for gasoline for the round trip = $25.00 IRS deduction at .14 cents per mile = 250 X .14 = $35.00 even with wear and tear on the vechile the
  6. AK, What type of reflector oven. Is is a coleman that fits over a propane or white gas stove? If they are, I have a set of instructions. If not, let me know what kind and I'll make some inquiries. Dancin
  7. One of my friends called me and asked me a question on the Eagle Scout presentation kit. Inside the kit there is a mothers pin, fathers tie tack the Eagle Scout device, Eagle Scout cloth badge and a gold mentor pin. Does anyone know about this. This is a new one to me. Dancin
  8. For those of you who have taken the course, congratulations and thank you for making the commitment to scouting. In the Wood Badge Spirit, David Harrison Senior Patrol Leader C-03-04 Lake Huron Area Council Sorry, all my post did not make it.
  9. I just finished serving as Senior Patrol Leader this last weekend and so much enjoyed the high energy level of the participants. Both weekends had great weather and the staff and patrols mixed as one solid unit. At the final assemby when I led all the patrols out of Gilwell field for the last time, it was such a emotional moment for me. I think I will remember it for the rest of my life. What a great program and what an honor to serve as a staff member. To all of

  11. I agree with Eamonn on the visitors patch. I went in 1997 as staff and purchased a visitor's patch. When I go again in 2005, I will again purchase some visitors patches. If anyone would like to come visit, we will be in the central region, sub-camp 11, Troop 1113. Dancin
  12. Since your troop program has been taken over by the PLC, let them decide what to do. If they prepare the program, they will buy into it. How they prepare will determine how they place in the competition. If they work the skills and such into the weekly troop meetings, and prepare themselfs well, they should do well. If they don't do well, but still did their best in preparing and in the competition, then they were successful. Dancin
  13. I go on Wed the 18th to our Council's Wood Badge course C-03-04 that starts on 8-20. I am the Senior Patrol Leader and we have a full course of 56. I am ready for some fun! And also a new crop of critters. Dancin
  14. He would be an Assistant Scoutmaster and the only restrictions would be that he and another under 21 year old could not take youth on a campout or he can not share a tent with a youth under the age of 18. Dancin
  15. Starwolfmom, Welcome to the forum. I had the privlege of meeting some scouts from Troop 111 at Camp Rotary in 1999. Great bunch of kids. I'm from up the road apiece in the Middle of the Mitten. Straight up US 127. My nephew is in a troop in Grand Ledge. Again, welcome. Dancinfox
  16. We're off to Camp Gerilick in Traverse City, MI on Sunday. Ready for a week of rest and relaxation away from the grind of work and honeydo's. Everyone have a great week. Dancin
  17. I agree with Acco40. I hold a COH on Friday night at Summer Camp. I purchase all the awards at the Trading Post, fill out the required forms and attach all rank, MB earned to the proper cards and present them to the Scouts. All parents are invited up during that evening if they wish. By doing this the Scouts receive their awards at the close of Summer Camp. I don't have to wait two to three months to award advancement and we achknowedge the Scouts at a formal COH in the fall. Dancin
  18. Thanks SR540Beaver. As I read the messages, I got totaly confused. I know some of the postings got hot and heavy, but was suprised when I read that Bob White and Eamonn said they were leaving. I hope all the evil is over and we can get back to the business of helping each other out. Thanks again for clearing this up. Dancin
  19. In reading all the posts lately, I've kind of confused. Who's gone where? Who is who? Who got mad? What has this forum become? I truly what to know. Yours dazed and confused Dancin
  20. I found this on the Great Salt Lake Council website: Less than half of the registered leaders in Cub Scout packs have completed basic training for their positions. To improve this record, the Cub Scout position of pack trainer is being introduced. The pack trainer: Qualifications: If residing in this country but not a citizen of the United States, agrees by the Scout Oath and Law, to respect and obey the laws of the United States of America, and to subscribe to the BSA statement of religious principle. Is at least 21 years of age, and is registered with BSA as a pack trainer. It i
  21. Sorry, I seem to be losing my posts. continued. I don't want you to think I don't agree with what you said, I do agree. A friend of mine who is a retired Marine and Airforce Sargent once said to me. "Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell and them looking forward to the trip." I try to use this when dealing with someone or somethings I can't change. Again, I am sorry. Dancin
  22. Bob, Your right. I didn't mean to imply or create a contrast to Eamonn's friendliness and if I did, I am truly sorry. I am sorry I said you have no compassion. Bad choice of words. I do understand the lack of patience and what ignoring the proper program can do. I don't think my post had a hint of what you said. I did say in my post that I believe in delivering the whole program, whether I agree with some or not. I don't want you to think I don't agree with wha
  23. Bob, I don't want you to get angry at me. I appreciate your knowledge of the rules and policies of the BSA. I don't ignore the program information as you state. I enjoy receiving the information. And I did not point out that you know the rules as if it was a bad thing. I never said any such thing. I feel you are very knowledgable and commend you in helping people out on this forum. Please don't take what I say as a slam to you, it isn't. I just made an observation
