  1. In our troop... campout signup closes 2 weeks before trip. you pay your campout fee which includes camping, food and gas depending on length of trip and occasionally $5.00 for lunch on the ride home. the next monday is menu planning and duty roster day. the patrols meet and plan their menus and work out the duty roster. now they have a box opf recipes that they work out of so it speeds things up. they elect a grubmaster/shopper. the menus/Shopping list and duty rosters get approved by Sm or ASM. the grubmaster then heads to the treasurer for money. we usually budget $10 per scout u
  2. I picked up a vintage in great shape red wool jacket. Problem is is that I should have gotten one size larger. Is anyone interested in trading my size 42 for a 44 or buying mine so I ccan get the one I want?
  3. We were at a B&G last week and one of the Webelos was cruisin around on a pair of Heelys. Our SPL can not stand them. He pulled the boy aside and asked if he planned on crossing over. He explained that boy Scouts were more mature and don't wear heelys and that they were not god for that 5 mile hike. Asked the boy not to wear them to meetings or campouts. Case closed.
  4. We had a scout who had gotten all the approvals back and never had time for his COH. He was going off to work at Sea Base and the troop wanted hime to have his eagle patch. We walked into our shop and asked for one. the gal behind the counter knows us but did ask who it was for and then went and checked to see if it was ok to sell. she then told us that the limit was two extra per scout unless you were buying a complete new shirt. she said they were imposing the rule to cut down on ebayers.
  5. I've given the Eagles in our Troop a custom turned pen with the eagle Scout pin attached to the clip. Some of the Eagles in other area Troops have also gotten these after their Scoutmaster asked me to make them for them. Some of the projects involved clearing trails so we saved some of the wood and used it to make the pen. Let me tell you, buck thorn is really wet but looks like bamboo when dry and turned.
  6. Our troops adults have their own patrol and cook for themselves. Once a year the troop have a cooking campout/competiton and the adults eat with the patrols. As a pay back the adults will cook for all the boys during their Spring camporee. The boys are always bringing us "treats" from thier cooking endevors. The adults will usually "guide the first year patrol the frst time then the guides take over.
  7. It's camp pioneer in Ohio. Yes they are a BSA camp. I think they have done something simular to what the Scout has proposed. I a way I think it fills a niche. It gets the paintball urge out of their system.
  8. We are going to summer camp that actually is promoting their new paint ball target shooting course. It looks to be a big hit,no pun intended.
  9. Let me elaborate more. The boy could care less about the patches. Mom came up to us and wondered about advancement. We sat down with the boy and had a conf. He is missing one or two things for each rank. Explained to him what to do and how we could help. he is good with the plan. Mom also said he does not want to be the center of attention. He is however one of the most outgoing guys when he is with his peers. He will do anything you need and is very good at it. He has no desire to get Eagle but said he would help anyone who is to get there. He shows up for Eagle and other servi
  10. I recently saw a picture of the Scouts in kilts and tan shirts. They may have been Scottish maybe not. It was a very nice look. Much dressier than our green "action fit" pants. We have a Scout who is also a member of the Scouts of Coasta Rica. His Eagle COH is coming up. which uniform does he get to wear?
  11. We have a scout who does not want to be recognized for his rank advancments etc. It's not like he is behind some of the other scouts. He says he is in it for the fun and does on want to be in the spotlight. court of Honor is coming up and he is moving up. do we respect his wishes and just give him the patch etc or announce it but not have him come up to receive the award. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  12. After the final clean up on tuesday night some of the staff were asking other staff this question. Would you work jambo again? would you do the same job? why? let's hear some opinions? I know it was a rough start but how was rest of your experience?
  13. After two years of planning it comes down to a few days. Everyone here seems ready to go. A few last minute items to pack and we are off. i just want to wish everyone a safe trip and hopefully see you at Jambo.
  14. I know this sound stupid but... Isn't there some ruling that while traveling on Scout business your should wear your field uniform(ClassA). That would mean for me that I would be wearing it to and from the airport and the bus ride to AP Hill. Just checking as others may want to know.
  15. OK group, our troop is looking at doing some caving in Indiana at a place called Marengo Caves. We are coming from SE Mich. the drive on a Friday night looks long. We are looking for a camp somewhere about an hour north of Indy. From our calculations this should make the trip to the cave about an hour and 20 min. If anybody knows different or has suggestions let me know. Thanks
  16. My sons are in the Raging Rams. The patrol got into the spirit and now have matching t shirts, neck slides and patrol flag. look for the guys in tie dye at 1107. right in the middle of the all Michigan area.
  17. maybe Sandyt888 or someone knows the answer. How stocked will the tradeing post be with items we have seen in the catalog? I've held off ordering some items in the hopes of just picking up some things there. I'm thinking of hat, neckerchief and one of the boys wants the belt/buckle. Thanks
  18. Dancin fox and Acco boy my boys are in sub camp 11. It's also fairly closeto where I'm at. I planned on going over to see their camp so I may just stop by and say hi to you guys also. *Edited because one letter appeared to be a typo and that typo made it look inappropriate* (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  19. Whenis everybody arriving? maybe we could all met before things get really crazy. Maybe the 22nd or 23rd. Flag pole at enterance?
  20. I'll be on staff at Heth/catering. Swing by and say Hi.
  21. if anyone is looking to buy a bugle for their troop I can say that the place to go is Scoutbugle.com Fred goes out of his way to make sure thing are right and the product is good also. We looked at another bugle sales site and the service was just not there and the product is somewhat mis-represented.
  22. I'm getting some requests rom the boys to try this but have no idea where to start. An internet search didn't turn up much. We are looking for something in the Ohio, Michigan Indiana, Kentucky area. Wil probably need an experienced guide also.
  23. It started with the first Eagle COH I did as Scoutmaster. the young mans project was clearing a new trail at the local park and removing the invasive Buckthorn. I saved some of the buckthorn and turned a pen from it. Gave it to him at the COH. Now every Scout that gets Eagle gets a handmade pen. They are great practical gifts. Now it I could only get the pen parts company to make clips with the Boy Scout symbol.
  24. While I'm technically "obese" the Doc wants me to drop about 30#. I'd like to lose it before Philmont next summer. Starting Jan. 1 I basiclly cut out the desserts. That help a bunch. My office is now located out in no mans land and the closest place even for coffee is half a mile. Lunch time is now a 2 mile hike through the park and a quick salad. I'm down 10 and the cholesterol levels look better. Red yeast rice and pomagrante juice help with that also. My problem is that it's an industrial hazard in my my business. On campouts we all take more hikes now, which is something I really e
