  1. Hello All. My little den is chugging along, but myself and others have noticed a growing issue. Our Committee Chair's youngest (a Bear) has been increasingly difficult to deal with, and is intentionally getting younger scouts into trouble. He'll go up to them and encourage them to do something they either don't know is against the rules, or have been told not to, but will mimic him when he violates the rule after which he rats them out after they copy him. At gatherings he's always running all over the place and interfering with the kids that are trying to accomplish the goal for the day, and interferes in clean up. Mom (CCh) NEVER says a word and it's getting beyond irritating to myself and other parents. Any advice on how to deal with this situation without rocking the boat too much? I've never been great at diplomacy in situations like this...

  2. Our pack does the following. The Pack provides a kit to every scout at the annual Christmas party and keeps a few in reserve. In January, a week or two before the race, there's a pack meeting where parents bring in tools and the cub scouts that need assistance bring in there blocks of wood, and everyone works for a couple of hours to design, cut, sand, etc. (everything but paint and apply graphite) to help anyone in the Pack that needs it. This really helped a couple of scouts that didn't have that help available at home.

Rules of the race are pretty simple: you can check in the night before or the morning of. It must be a newly constructed car. No pre-built kits permitted. If you want to use a vehicle from a previous year, if adults or siblings want to race, if you want to violate the weight restrictions, no problem! There's an Outlaw race that occurs afterwards. Our schedule is: race, eat lunch, give awards, run outlaw races.

  3. My son's den started up late due to a small number of boys at the Wolf level. He didn't do Tiger, so he did his Bobcat right away as we started on his Wolf requirements. While he was the only one in the ceremony, he loved the fact that there was one, and it greatly increased his enthusiasm for Scouting. Since it's kids just getting into scouts, while it may be hard, lean on others to help you out and let them feel that enthusiasm from the ceremony if at all possible.

  4. Thank you! I'll definitely be coming back for ideas as things pick up. The couple of members of the pack that I've talked to that are helping everyone out have stated their willingness to guide me in getting things going, it was just a surprise to have this happen so quickly! I'll definitely be sticking around the forum and looking for ideas. Thank!

  5. Hello All - it sounds like I'm going to be getting more involved with scouts than I expected! I did some cub scouts as a child, but my pack dissolved and we didn't continue on. Fast forward 20+ years, and my son asked about cub scouts. They've just got his Den started (so few boys in his age group they finally started despite how small it is) and the den leader quit. If I didn't volunteer it sounded like they wouldn't do much and next year would be an even larger question mark. Sooooo, I'm now Den Leader to a Wolf Den of 2 boys (my son and one other boy). I'm here looking for ideas and possible input when questions come up. Thanks!
